Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr. Youth Legacy Awards

: The African American Men of Westchester, Inc. (“AAMW”) and United Way of Westchester - Putnam in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Youth Awards Committee will hold its 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Legacy Awards celebration of young people age 12 – 21 on Monday, January 21, 2013, at 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Tarrytown Doubletree Hotel, 455 South Broadway, Tarrytown, NY.  Admission and lunch is $25.00.


Six (6) students were chosen as 2013 Youth Legacy awardees and they will be presented with cash prizes, and together with the nominees in the following categories will be recognized as positively impacting and/or contributing to the community in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as follows: 


Building Bridges:  Raina Kadavil - 10th grade at White Plains High School: Awarded to the person who took appropriate action in raising awareness and implementation a project to unify a group and establish a common ground for the good of others.

Peace and Non-Violence: Mikyla Abdul-Azim – 12th grade Peekskill High School – Awarded to the person who organized or participated in events which reinforce effective communication and community problem solving.


Social Action: Chelsea Bristow – 12th grade – White Plains High School – Awarded to the person who has organized and activity promoting an amendment to any social, political, or environmental issue to correct injustices within their community or school.

Social Justice: Antonia Riley – Mount Vernon High School – Awarded to the person who upholds a standard of integrity and organizes in the pursuit of just equitable distribution of resources for others in the community or school.


Spirit of Love: Imani Smith: Spirit of Love – New Rochelle High School – Awarded to the person who engages in activities which seeks to provide uplift to others in the community or school.


Vision (I have a Dream): Tabitha Glashen – White Plains High School – Awarded to the person who participated in the planning and implementation process of events geared to provide adequate services to individuals; crossing race, class and gender barriers in their community or school.


 "We believe there are a lot more good things going on with our young people than bad," said William Carter of White Plains and Co-chair of the Legacy Youth Awards Committee, and member of African American Men of Westchester, Inc.  "There's joy and prosperity in serving your community. There's intrinsic value in doing things in your community. They serve as an example of the commitment to civic and public deeds that reflect Dr. King's teachings.  It all starts at home."


Melvin Burruss of Peekskill and Chairman of the Board of African American Men of Westchester, one of the primary sponsors of the awards, said real change - revolutionary change - starts small and grows through dedicated individuals like the award recipients.
