Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run Winds Through Tarrytown Thursday

The Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics is the largest grassroots fundraising and public awareness vehicle for the movement across the globe! More than 85,000 officers from 35 countries carried the "Flame of Hope" across their communities and into their local games and competitions last year! Internationally in 2012, LETR raised more than $42.1 million for Special Olympics, including over $1 million right here in New York!  

For over 25 years, thousands of law enforcement officers have carried the Flame of Hope through their towns, villages, and cities signifying the unique relationship between the athletes of Special Olympics NY and the Law Enforcement community.  

Staging for the LETR Torch Run will start on Thursday, May 1, at the 3rd Pct. Yonkers Police Dept. Riverdale Ave. at 8:00 a.m. The Law Enforcement will then carry the torch through Mt. Vernon, Bronxville, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, Scarsdale, White Plains, Greenburg, Elmsford, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Mt. Pleasant, Sleepy Hollow, Briarcliff Manor, Ossining, Croton, Cortlandt, Buchanan, and ending on Water Street, River Front Park, Peekskill, NY.

The LETR Torch Runs help raise funds and awareness to our Athletes. Special Olympics NY provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults living with intellectual disabilities, including mental retardation. Athletes are never charged nor are their families or caregivers for participating. This is the mission of Special Olympics, to keep these programs alive and this is why fundraisers, such as the Miles for Medals walk, Polar Plunges, rUNDEAD and more are so important.  Currently, New York State has the largest Special Olympics program in the country, serving more than 64,000 athletes.
