Headless Horsemen of North Tarrytown Unite

Alumni of the old North Tarrytown High School are gearing up for an All Classes Reunion September 21 through 23.

For many, North Tarrytown will always be North Tarrytown. And for those around before the 1950s, their high school will always be what is now the Morse School on Beekman.

Every three years, alumni of the old North Tarrytown High School plan their All Classes Reunion. Their time to gather again will come in just a few weeks, a moment some folks have been working on all year.

Their numbers are dwindling – Ed Murphy, class of ’45, writes, “Not a lot of us left from the old school” – but he hopes “a lot more of us from around the country will return to see the old hometown, friends and wonderful restaurants and shops in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.”

All attendees, grads or not, and their guests and friends are welcome to a weekend’s worth of events.

Dr. Dan Rizzi highlighted an important, if solemn, tradition amidst the festivities. On September 23 at 2 pm, the North Tarrytown Reunion Committee will return to their former high school to honor the 45 heroes that gave their lives in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

In 2003, the Alumni Association commissioned a bronze plaque engraved with the names of NTHS attendees who made the supreme sacrifice during these wars. The plaque was mounted that year at the entrance of Morse School. Classmates have gathered there every three years since to hold a short memorial service in their honor.

This year, they have planned an hour long service with friends, relatives, dignitaries, and clergy. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Ted Ostlund will be the main speaker.

“Although the ceremony can be quite solemn during our festive reunion events, it will be a brief moment of remembrance for all those that served so gallantly,” said Rizzi.

The schedule of events for the weekend:

  • Friday, Sept. 21: Social gathering at 5 p.m. with pizza at the Eagles Club, North Broadway next to the Sleepy Hollow Animal Hospital.
  • Saturday, Sept. 22: Dinner dance at 7 p.m. at the .
