Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown Residents Film Our Story

We've gotten to see the spooky/campy side of Sleepy Hollow in a commercial made to promote our seasonal offerings this year.

There's of course the Fox TV show Sleepy Hollow, whose crazy over-the-top (yet headless) version of our village is so nationally popular it's the first show of the fall line-up to get renewed for another season.

Then, there's the homegrown and much sunnier 10-minute Sound & Story film made by 10 residents of both villages. After some brief film-making instruction at the Warner Library, they took to the streets and shops of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to meet real people doing their thing.

Here, that means a little of everything. We meet small business owners, visitors, historians, and many people we recognize, basking in the beauty, bounty, and so many stories of our environs.

There's Karen Ringen of Whimsies, talking about the gravestone names (Katrina Van Tassel ring a bell?) that inspired Washington Irving characters. She herself had the good fortune to enjoy an impromptu Halloween wedding in the Old Dutch Church.

There's a glimpse of former Patch editor, Sean Roach, Au Naturel owner Anna, the Reformed Church pastor's wife, Moira Gargano and so many more, from the bread vendor at the farmer's market and the owner of Curios to admirers of the Virgin of Guadalupe tree. What they say is all lovely:

  • "the most beautiful place"
  • "the flow of the river gives so much energy to this town"
  • "I should have moved here a long time ago"
  • "it's like I'm on a weekend holiday"
  • "the best town in America"
  • "there's a lot of history to be proud of"
The owner of Beekman's Gun and Tackle shop recounts his youth, hunting where the GM site once was, watching cobblestone streets turn to blacktop. There's yarn of every color, Bakelite jewelry, Hank's Alley affordable antiques, food food food, and, of course, our beloved library.
