Tarrytown's Madden Completes Crazy Race in a Moon Bear Costume

Who knew wearing a bear costume could be so lucrative?

Tarrytown’s Kai Madden – you may have seen him around – has been training, in a bear costume, for another go at the insane Tough Mudder competition.

This year he raised $10,507 for the Animals Asia nonprofit, working to rescue and rehab moon bears who are cruelly used for the bile that is so prized in traditional Chinese medicines.

The Tough Mudder is torturous itself – "probably the toughest event on the planet" is their tagline – with competitors racing through fire, live wires, ice water and more awful challenges. Perhaps the bear suit served as protection from these harsh elements but surely made moving around a little clumsier.

But no fur off his back: Madden ran the entire 11-mile course “in style” in his full bear suit.

For a few years now, Madden has dedicated his seemingly endless energy to help the plight of these beautiful bears, with a previous Tough Mudder, a documentary film screening at the Tarrytown Music Hall and more.

And he’s not done. “The costume is ruined, but once I get a new one I'll be running around town again training for next year's NYC Marathon," he says.

In the meantime, enjoy the YouTube video above and follow his wild endeavors on Facebook.
