Weekend Planner: Sheep-Shearing, Run for the Hills, Science Barge Opening

Sheep to Shawl Festival in Sleepy Hollow

When/Where: Used to be one weekend but they've upgraded this popular spring event to two weekends, beginning at 10 a.m. on April 14 and 15 and then, April 21 and 22 at  in Sleepy Hollow

Why Go: The historic Philipsburg Manor holds its annual Sheep to Shawl Festival, a celebration of the resident sheep losing their winter coats. They'll be shorn in the 18th century manner in the barnyard, while related activities, including wool dyeing, spinning, and weaving, and special hands-on activities for children, take place simultaneously, led by people in costume. Picnic food is available. Visitors can also watch Gene Sheninger's agile Scottish border collies who'll deftly herd sheep and ducks as well.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! Audience-Interactive Beatles Tribute Concert

When/Where:  Friday, April 13, 8 p.m. at the Village of 

Why Go: The Irvington Town Hall Theater says that PreFab 4, a nationally-touring group, is the world’s most innovative Beatles tribute band. All songs played during the performance are determined by audience request, "allowing the lads to connect with their audiences in ways that elude other Beatles tribute acts." The band covers material from the entire Beatles catalog.

Price: $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students

 

Lincoln’s Secret Visit to West Point

Why Go: President Lincoln made a clandestine trip to the U.S. Military Academy in the middle of the Civil War in June 1862 on his longest journey away from the White House and on his only trip to N.Y. State during his entire presidency.  Based upon some new, original research, Anthony Czarnecki reveals why Lincoln came to West Point, what he did during his three-day stay in the Hudson River Valley, and how history changed as a result of his secret visit. Join for a preview of his fascinating account of this historic event.

Family Day at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art

When/Where: Sunday, April 15, 2-5 p.m. at  in Peekskill

Why Go:  Come explore the exciting and playful art of the 1980s. Experiment using different materials during an interactive, fun-for-all-ages day. There will be a scavenger hunt, a chance to create sculptures, masks and more.

In the Composer’s Studio” with Jennifer Higdon

When/Where: Saturday, April 15, 3 p.m. at Mount Kisco's Copland House

Why Go: 2010 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon visits this historic residence where she will introduce two of her major works, "Light Refracted" and the Piano Trio, and lead a Q&A with the audience following the performances by Music from Copland House.

Price:  Tickets are $10, $20 and $25

 

Run for the Hills

When/Where:  Saturday, April 14 at 8 a.m., check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. in front of the 

Why Go:  Feel the spring air and "Run for the Hills" as The Bedford Hills Neighborhood Association presents this third annual local run.

Phineas and Ferb Live

When/Where:  Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 7 p.m., Saturday 12 noon and 3:30 p.m. Sunday 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at .

Why Go:  Disney's Phineas and Ferb Live will bring to the stage the antics of this popular kids' show in a fantastic live show that kids will love.

Science Barge Season Opening

When/Where:  Saturday, April 14, 2 p.m. on the Science Barge at the end of Dock Street-Yonkers downtown waterfront. Free tours of the Barge will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held every hour on the hour until closing at 6 p.m. 

Why Go: The Science Barge, a Floating Environmental Center and Urban Farm is opening this weekend for its fourth year.

It is an award-winning and nationally recognized program of Groundwork Hudson Valley—a sustainable urban farm completely powered “off the grid” by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels and irrigated by rainwater and purified river water. Educating students and the general public about sustainable development and food production, renewable energy and Hudson River ecology are among the major goals of The Science Barge. 

Children can make and take home recycled egg crate “bugs.”  The Nepperhan Community Center’s Drum Corps will perform.  Free refreshments and giveaways will also be provided.

Somers Library Celebrates Thirty Years in Reis Park

When/Where: Saturday, April 14 beginning at 10 a.m. at 

Why Go:  Bring your family to celebrate the Somers Library's 30 years in Reis Park with children's activities like Storytime, face painting, Angry Birds bean bag toss, Legos, a juggler and more.

Price: Free

 

Chappaqua Green Fair

When/Where:  Saturday, April 14, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at  in Chappaqua

Why Go: The fair is a fun and educational community event, bringing together students, adults, and organizations, all of whom are committed to protecting our environment and promoting sustainable living. Get some “Green” ideas and see a live animal show presented by Greenburgh Nature Center at 12 noon. There will be a “Sports Swap n’ Shop”: Bring your gently used equipment to swap for something “new “and also visit more than 40 booths.
