Lefteris Gyro Provides Good Value for the Buck

Long popular for serving Greek specialties at affordable prices, Lefteris Gyro has sister eateries in Mt. Kisco and Yonkers.

Lefteris Gyro has three Westchester County locations where customers can dine on sumptuous and inexpensive Greek-influenced lunches or dinners. Its catering menu provides similar values for some of the more popular Greek specialties on the regular menu—most of the catering items are packaged in trays or aluminum containers.

Owner Chris Grammatas is a Tarrytown resident and a veteran of the Vietnamese conflict during which he was an Army cook. He began working in the restaurant business 50 years ago at his father's restaurant in The Bronx.

Lefteris has been attracting crowds to its corner location at Broadway and Main Street since it opened in 1994 by charging affordable prices and serving large portions of Greek specialties. On-the-sidewalk, people-watching tables wrap around the corner and during warmer weather are subject to a waiting list.

A typical three-course meal for a couple can start with two "small" Greek salads ($7.95 each), followed by a pair of gyros wrapped in pita ($7.25 each), and concluded with two baklava pastries for dessert ($4.95 each). The bill for this amounts to $20.15 per person (not including tax and tip).

But since the eatery's dishes are truly full platefuls and there is no way many of us can eat so much food, what isn't consumed can be carried home.

Or a couple with nonravenous appetites can order two gyros and share a small salad and a dessert—this drops the cost-per-person to a mere $13.70 (and no one leaves hungry).

Catering possibilities

Dishes offered on the catering menu include beef and lamb or chicken gyros  (serves 20 people, $75), Greek salad ($45 for 10-person portion), baklava (a 32-piece tray for $120),  spinach or cheese pie (25 triangular pieces for $35), moussaka (a half tray is priced at $60), dolmades (25 stuffed grape leaves in a 7-inch aluminum container at $15) and falafel balls ($1.15 each).

Five years ago Shrimp Saganki, a savory combination of shrimp, onion, garlic, fresh tomato and feta cheese, was added to the menu and is now one of the best sellers; it is priced at $13.95.

All soups are homemade. For many years, lobster bisque has been served only on Friday to Sunday. Avgolemono is a egg-lemon-sauce soup with chicken chucks served with rice. Liz Johnson, the food editor of The Journal News and LoHud.com, reported that Grammatas who grew up on the Greek island of Lesbos was fed this soup by his grandmother whenever he had a cold.

Lefteris Gyro has a sister dining destination called Lefteris Gyro II in Mt. Kisco, opened in 2005, and another, Lefteris Gyro Plus, opened in 2012 at the Ridge Hill shopping mall in Yonkers. This restaurant has a view of the kitchen from the dining area and a full bar; it seats 140 inside and 35 more outside. All three restaurants are open seven days a week.
