Mary Poppins Will Open on May 8 at The Westchester Broadway Theatre

Mary Poppins, bowing in at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford on Thursday, May 8, 2014, is a musical play based on the children's books of P.L.Travers and the widely acclaimed 50-year-old movie bearing the same name.

It opened on stage in London in December, 2004 and on Broadway nearly two years later.

The film, brought to the big screen by Walt Disney Productions in 1964, starred Julie Andrews playing nanny Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke as her good friend Bert.

Released on August 27, 1964, it received thirteen Academy Award nominations and won five 1964 Oscars. But it lost out for Best Picture to My Fair Lady although grossing thirty percent more at the box office than the Audrey Hepburn/Rex Harrison movie. Both musicals are set in the distant past in London.

Mary Poppins continues at the Westchester Broadway Theatre through July 27, 2014 and is followed by The Wizard of Oz, based on the 1900 novel by L. Frank Baum. The 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie version of Baum's book, starring Judy Garland and a star-studded supporting cast, is considered one of Hollywood's finest achievements. The Wizard of Oz debuts on July 31 and runs until September 21, 2014.

Mary Poppins (a "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" show) was performed on Broadway more than 2,500 times and it received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Cast in the leading roles for the coming performances are Lauren Blackman as Mary Poppins and Leo Ash Evans as Bert. Richard Stafford is the director.

The songs include Feed the Birds, Jolly Holiday, Step in Time and Chim-Chim Cher-ee.

Ticket prices range from $52 to $80 per person plus tax and include dinner or lunch. Discounts are available for seniors, children and groups at selected performances. Parking is free.
