Mustang Finish 2013 on a Winning Note

After finishing the Fall 2013 outdoor season undefeated the Tarrytown under age 11 girls Mustang soccer team headed into post-season play on November 23rd at the Somers Fall Classic Tournament.  The girls opened against a Somers Club team that was first place in the fourth rated division in the Westchester Youth Soccer League.  Despite outplaying the home team Lady Cougars, the Mustangs were unable to score and earned the Tie.  The Mustangs next played the top rated Harrison Hornets who were ranked 3rd out of 53 teams in the Westchester Youth Soccer League.  Harrison showed tremendous skill but the Mustangs played hard and appeared equal with the Hornets and on the verge of an upset.  There were several controversial calls during the game, which went against the Mustangs including two potential tripping no calls in the box and a goalie interference call that cost the Mustangs a goal.  Harrison scored on another controversial play where Mustang defender Annie Dineen was injured and the Tarrytown keeper appeared to have the ball kicked out of her hands.  After succumbing 1-0 to favorite Harrison, the Mustangs appeared to lose their fight.  They won 1-0 against Ossining off a goal by Talia Fante and lost their final game 1-0 to Croton as temperatures dipped into the 30s.  Overall the Mustangs allowed only 2 goals the whole tournament but their offense was not enough and they had to settle for third place.

With the outdoor season over the Mustangs began the indoor winter season by joining a top league at Chelsea Piers in Stanford Connecticut.  There they play top club teams from the Westchester Youth Soccer League and Connecticut Junior Soccer Association.   The Mustangs opened league play against the C division Greenwich Thunder Cats with a 2-2 tie.  Julia Costa and Talia Fante both scored goals in the opening game.  After adjusting strategy for the indoor game, the girls dominated the Rye Raiders 5-0 in their second game with 2 goals from Julia Costa, 1 goal from Maddy Navin, 1 goal from Sophie Sylves-Berry, and 1 goal from Samantha Nutig.  Rye is a level 3-club team in the Westchester Youth Soccer League and the highest rated team the Mustangs have ever beaten.  The girls now find themselves in third place out of 10 teams and start 2014 with a match against the A level Old Greenwich Blue.  Old Greenwich is undefeated and leads the league standings.  The girls hope to use the winter season to develop their passing skills, which would improve their spring fortunes and ultimately their play at national games this summer in California.
