Mustangs Continue to Improve in 2014

While many local soccer teams take the winter off, the Tarrytown Mustangs under age 11 girls soccer team has been busy practicing indoors twice a week and playing in a competitive soccer league at Chelsea Piers Connecticut.  The girls have been facing off against top club teams from Westchester Youth Soccer League and the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association.  On January 4 the Mustangs lost to an “A” level team from Old Greenwich 0-3. The Mustangs weren’t particularly outplayed, but still hadn’t found their indoor rhythm.   The next week they defeated Darien 3-1 with goals from Julia Costa, Talia Fante, and Maddy Navin.  They next played the Level 1 undefeated Harrison Hornets on January 25 and played their best game to date.  The game was hard fought and the Mustangs played well enough to win, but lost 1-2.  The Mustangs lone goal came off a beautiful play where Maya Weitzen saved a ball from going out of bounds, crossed it to Talia Fante, who passed to Samantha Nutig for the score.

The Mustangs Started February on a strong note taking it to Rye 6-0 with scores from Samantha Nutig (3), Maya Weitzen, Julia Costa, and Talia Fante.  Defenders Maddy Navin, Sadie Swenson, Annie Dineen, and Carolina Lopez get credit for the shutout.  On February 8th the girls took on the home team Chelsea Piers and let a 2-1 lead slip away in the final 30 seconds.  The tie was tough to swallow and the Mustangs learned to keep attacking and not rest on a lead.  Chelsea Piers was the fourth place team at the time.  After the Presidents day holiday break the Mustangs took on 3rd place, level B-1, New Canaan.  This New Canaan Red team had tremendous passing, skill, and discipline, but the Mustangs were relentless and took a dominating 4-2 win.  Samantha Nutig and Emma Clarke both scored 2 goals each and the constant offensive pressure had the Red on their heels most of the game.  Finally last week the Mustangs over whelmed the “C” level New Canaan Black team 9-2.  The Tarrytown girls displayed complete domination against a decent team.  Talia Fante led scorers with 3 goals.  Maya Weitzen and Emma Clarke scored 2 each, and Samantha Nutig and Sophie Sylves-Berry added one each.  The defense led by Maddy Navin, Annie Dineen, Sadie Swenson, and Carolina Lopez only allowed one goal with the second coming off a penalty kick.  Throughout the winter season keepers Sophie Sylves-Berry, Julia Costa, Carolina Lopez, Catherine Grimes, and Samantha Nutig have shared time in goal and played strong.

The Mustangs find themselves one point behind the third place team New Canaan Red that they just beat 4-2.  They next play the Old Greenwich White team, which they tied in their first game, followed by another chance against the Harrison Hornets.  When the indoor season ends, the Mustangs will be competing in the Rye Kickoff Classic March 30th.  They have chosen to play against club teams one year older on a larger field in an 11v11 format instead of 9v9.  After all this practice and work the Mustangs should be ready for a strong AYSO spring season in area 3T.  After the spring they will be getting ready for the national games in California in July.  There will be one more major fundraiser on June 7th at J.P. Doyle’s.
