Sixth Time is the Charm for Mustangs

For the first time in six games spanning three years the Tarrytown under age 11 Mustangs defeated the Mt Pleasant Wildcats 4-0 on Saturday Oct 26 in Mt Pleasant.  In five previous games the Mustang girls had lost twice, tied 3 times, and only scored 2 total goals against the Wildcat 4 man defensive front.  Coach Sutherland went for offense and moved star goal keeper Julia Costa up to forward to pressure Mt Pleasant.  This move was made even knowing that the Mustangs were without stand out keeper Sophie-Sylves Berry.  The Mustangs instead gave the start to Catherine Grimes at goalie for the whole first half and she played flawless. The strategy worked as Julia had a career game.  After dominating the first quarter, the Mustangs headed into the second quarter desperate for a score.  Julia got a pass at the top of the box from Samantha Nutig.  She quickly fired a missile into the upper left corner of the net past the helpless Wildcat keeper.  Julia wasn’t finished and she again received a pass from Samantha Nutig and this time sent a rainbow lob from deep outside.  The Mt Pleasant keeper helplessly looked up as the ball dropped under the cross bar but above her out stretched hands.  In the third quarter defensive captain Maddy Navin decided to leave no doubts.  She stole a ball from a Mt Pleasant midfielder, beat two of their defenders, headed to end line and managed to cross the ball all the way to the other side of the goal to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.  With the victory in hand Julia Costa fired another shot that was so hard that it bounced off the Wildcat keeper and temporarily stunned her.  Maya Weitzen was there to kick the rebound in to finish off the wildcats 4-0.  After the game the Mt Pleasant coach stated that they had never given up 4 goals in a season, let alone one game.

Many girls had their best games to date. Caroline Grimes and Samantha Livingston were impressive at their wing positions. They consistently beat Mt Pleasant to the ball and moved the ball the length of the field.  Annie Dineen, Sadie Swenson, and Carolina Lopez held off the speedy and skilled Mt Pleasant attackers.  Emma Clarke was versatile as usual, playing offense and defense in the stellar effort.  Talia Fante was strong at forward nearly scoring herself. Besides 2 assists, Sam Nutig had many shots on goal and even played a quarter at goalie.
