Tarrytown Girls Handle Ardsley After Being Selected For Califonia Tournament

Days after finding out they had been selected to compete in the AYSO National games in California, the Tarrytown under age 10 girls soccer team defeated the Ardsley Arsenal 7-2 . The girls will proudly represent Tarrytown and compete against 68 other teams on a national stage in the summer of 2014.

Saturday's contest, however, was located right here in Westchester. When the Mustangs last played the Arsenal in the spring of 2012 they lost 5-2. This time improved play led to an offensive explosion that left the Arsenal reeling. Starting goalie Julia Costa caught the Arsenal off guard with a deep drop kick to Maya Weitzen that resulted in the first score. Rising star Talia Fante then found Maya again for another score. Ardsley fought back with a great crossing shot that even Julia Costa could not stop. This was the first goal Julia has allowed in 2013. Julia responded earning a second assist and repeating the initial score with another long kick to Maya, who again beat the Arsenal keeper to extend the lead to 3-1. Maya wasn't finished and scored a fourth goal and assisted Talia on an impressive goal that gave the Mustangs a 5-1 half time lead.

In the second half Talia scored her second goal off an assist from Julia Costa, who then scored a goal of her own. Julia intercepted an Arsenal goal kick and without hesitation awed the crowd and blasted it under the crossbar. Ardsley scored their second goal against Maya Weitzen who played goalie in the second half. Caroline Grimes played strong at left wing and was robbed of a goal by a great Arsenal save. Sam Livingston came close to scoring as well from her postion at right wing. Maddy Navin was dominant at defense and midfield, continuously stopping Arsenal advances and returning the ball to the offense. Annie Dineen and Sadie Swenson continue to develop into two of league's best defenders, severely limiting the Arsenal scoring opportunities and returning the ball to the offense. Catherine Grimes played well at both offense and defense contributing to the winning effort.

The Mustangs now have 13 wins, 1 loss, and 3 ties for the 2012-2013 season. They next play June 8th against the Ardsley Spirit at Washington Irving elementry school. These teams last saw each other in the Somers Fall Classic Tournament when Tarrytown won 3-0. The Mustangs will also begin making practice and fundraising plans for their trip to California for the national games in the summer of 2014.
