Winterberries Warm Up a Chilly Garden

Two small winterberry shrubs are providing hits of bright color right now in the Native Plant Garden in Neperan Park, which is maintained by the Little Gardens of Tarrytown. These Eastern native hollies (Latin name: ilex verticillata) are both deciduous—their leaves fall off in autumn—and dioecious—the plants are either male or female. In the fall, they produce large quantities of  red berries which tend to linger for several months. Birds avoid eating the sour fruits until they’ve run through tastier options (like those on viburnums).
