Ellen Dorothy Jean, a longtime Sleepy Hollow resident died on January 27, 2013 at the age of 78. Born in the Bronx on August 28, 1934, she was the daughter of Elio and Ida Rutulante Colasacco. Mrs. Jean worked in various capacities before taking time to raise her children.  She later worked for Marymount College in Tarrytown until her retirement in 2000.  She had many interests, but will be remembered as being an avid reader who enjoyed participating in book clubs and she spent many years tutoring school children as a volunteer in the area of reading.

Ellen is survived by Robert, her husband of 46 years as well as her son Robert Eliot Jean of Charlottesville, VA and her daughter Janet and son-in-law Brian Downing of Sleepy Hollow. She is also survived by her step-grandson Maximilian, her granddaughter Ellena and her brother Robert M. Colasacco of Yonkers as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7-9 PM and Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9PM. Her Funeral Mass will be at the Church of the Magdalene on Friday at 10:00 with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
