Joan Sondheim Vogel, Retired Chemist, 86

A memorial service for Joan Sondheim Vogel be held at the Coffey Funeral Home on Sunday, March 17th from noon to 1 p.m..

Joan Sondheim Vogel, a retired chemist and long time resident of Westchester County, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 12th. She was 86.

She was born on June 28, 1926 in New York, New York. She attended the Birch Wathen secondary school in New York City and graduated from Vassar College with a B.S. in chemistry in 1946. She began her career as a chemist for Merck Pharmaceuticals and she retired after a very productive career as part of the Westchester County Medical Examiner team at Grasslands Hospital. Her accomplishments included discovery of the cyanide in the famous Tylenol case.

On June 28,1951 she married Peter H. Vogel, a World War II veteran who served in Europe as a glider pilot and served as a member of General George Patton's Third Army. She was widowed after a wonderful 40 year marriage.

She is survived by two sons, Peter H. Vogel, Jr.(Ellen) of Dayton, OH. and Richard S. Vogel(Pat) of Shoreview, MN. She was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren: Michael, Christine, Elizabeth, Kathryn, and James. She was also great-grandmother to three greatgranddaughters: McKenna, Brooklyn, and Presley.

She will be greatly missed by a wide circle of family and friends, including those at her final residence, Kendal on Hudson. Donations in her name are being made to the American Heart Association(www.heart.org)
