Obituary: Sr. Vianney Stewart, 91

Sr. Vianney Stewart passed away on Aug. 2 at Marymount Convent in Tarrytown. Born in 1938 in Ireland to Thomas and Bridget Hickey Stewart; she was originally named Katherine Stewart.

She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Tarrytown in 1938 and taught at St. Catharine of Alexandria in Brooklyn. She went on to teach at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Sag Harbor and Manhattan and was principal of the Marymount School in Tarrytown.

She also taught in Columbia, London and Paris. She also served at the Cormaira Retreat House in Sag Harbor, was a parish volunteer at St. Catharine of Alexandria and retired to Marymount Convent.

Her sister, Sr. Declan Stewart and many nieces and nephews survive her. Her brothers and sisters, including Sr. Gretta Stewart, predecease her. 

Services are on Aug. 6 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Ave. in Tarrytown. The mass of Christian burial is on Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m., and the burial will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery in White Plains.

Donations can be made to the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, 50 Wilson Park Dr. in Tarrytown, in lieu of flowers.
