Each week, we're going to share with you a local mom who we think is awesome. We'll ask her some questions and hear about how she manages life with kids in our area. We hope you'll enjoy getting to know some of our neighbors.
Fiona Galloway lives in Tarrytown with her husband, Greg and their daughter, Madeleine (4). Fiona is a freelance event and production manager.
1. How do you balance being a mom and working?
Fiona began freelancing before Madeleine arrived and it has been helpful in giving her some flexibility. For her, "its all a bit of a hodge podge," with her family in the UK and Greg's in Virginia. Fiona makes it work because of a "brilliant sitter, Mara Maggiola, and a great school, Tarrytown Nursery School." It also helps that her work "tends to come in waves and is very deadline driven," so there are some periods of intense work that can be followed by times of quiet.
2. Tell us more about your work- we'd love to hear more it!
Fiona's work changes often and can be quite varied. She recently finished working on a new exhibit space at the Jewish Children's Museum in Brooklyn and was able to do some design work and involve her daughter. For this project, Fiona "made some sculptures, painted some murals and designed some activities for a Soft Play area which has a Noah's Ark theme." Since she holds a degree in Fine Art, it was enjoyable for her to use it like this.
She is now in London working as an Event Manager for the International Live Music Conference. This has been an extra special project because Madeleine has been able to have an "extended visit with her Grandma and Grandad!"
Back in Westchester, Fiona and her husband, Greg, have been co-managers of Tarrytown's Third Friday with . It is something she really enjoys doing and has been a great community event.
Fiona doesn't know what is next, but is "always on the look out for a new gig." For her, she feels that "working as a freelancer and being a parent have a lot in common, long hours, frequent poverty, erratic schedule, but very rewarding and a lot of fun!"
3. When you find time for yourself, what do you enjoy doing locally?
Fiona wishes there were more free time these days, but when it does happen, she hangs around Tarrytown and likes "sitting at the window counter in Coffee Labs, or any of the wonderful eateries in town, and watching the world go by, especially when all the sidewalk tables come out."
Last summer, the Galloways began cycling around the lakes and trails together as a family.
4. What are some of your top things to do around Westchester with your family?
This family enjoys wandering Tarrytown and visiting the great shops and restaurants and feels that "there almost isn't a need to go anywhere else."
The Galloways have enjoyed discovering other great parts of Westchester. Last summer, they "found the beach at Rye Town Park, which is incredibly close and great for little kids." Fiona adds "The Hudson River dominates this side of the county that we had completely forgotten that Westchester has another 'coast'."
5. What is your favorite thing about living in this area?
Fiona likes the "combination of small town feel with proximity to the city." While she and her husband initially chose Tarrytown "for its express train stop," they are grateful that "it is such a wonderful place."
