Mother's Day Gift Ideas in Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow

Patch visits area merchants and finds out what special goodies they have for us to help celebrate our Moms on their special day.

Hey, folks, I will break this news to you as gently as possible.  You have less than a week before Mother's Day rolls around.

This year, Mother's Day  falls on Sunday, May 9. But, fear not. There are a host of places, within the Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow area, that are available to help you make your special Mom's day a memorable one.

We recently walked through the business district of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to see what special treats may be in store for 'Mom' on her special day.

We started our day with a light breakfast at The Horseman Restaurant, where we were warmly greeted by Melissa Smutek, the daughter of  manager Laura Smutek.   Mrs. Smutek informs us that each mother will be given a complimentary glass of wine and a carnation when they dine at this cozy, but legendary eatery on Sunday.  For more information, you may contact Mrs. Smutek at (914)-631-2984.

Eclipse - Hair - Body - Nails Salon, located at 98 North Broadway, will be offering a special body treatment and facial that is designed to refresh and pamper the body.  Call Melissa at (914)--524-0835 for details.

Elite Hair Design, located at 39 North Broadway, plans to hand out gift bags to customers filled with a host of shampoos, conditioners and styling products.  Owner El Iaconetti tells us that gift certificates will also be made available for purchase.  Please call 631-1120 for more details.

Silver Tips Tea Room, located at 3 North Broadway, is offering a very special afternoon for Mom on her day.  A special afternoon featuring an assortment of exotic teas, tea sandwiches and desserts will be offered, by reservation only, with three seatings at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm. Cost is $25 per person and will also include a free gift for Mom.  The Silver Tips Tea Room is also offering  a China Tea Mug with infuser and lid!  Pick it up on its own, or packaged with 2 oz. each of a Breakfast and Fruit tea.  Their website, www.silvertipstea.com proudly proclaims that Moms are celebrated everyday but especially this Mother's Day.  For reservations and more information, please call (914)-332-8515.

If you wish to treat your Mom's sweet tooth and, at the same time, compliment her on her gardening techniques, you need look no further than Edible Arrangements. Located at 25 Main Street, they will be featuring a beautifully decorated edible arrangement housed in a beautiful watering can.  Your thoughtfulness will be long remembered when Mom uses the watering can to nourish her blooming garden. Arrangements start at $40 and up.  The manager also tells us that they will be offering a variety of other arrangements with a Mother's Day motif featuring balloons and Daisy Bears.  For more information, please call (914)-332-8400.

Hair-On-the-Hudson, located at 29 Main Street, will be giving customers 25 percent discount business cards that will be good for any future service between May 9 and June 20. They will also be giving out roses to mothers on Saturday. For more information, please call (914)-909-9064.

Nick Thrapsimis, designer/owner of Tarrytown Floral Designs, located at 7 South Broadway, tells us that he will be offering a wide array of floral arrangements with a seasonal spring motif, and he also showed us a bountiful assortment of orchids, ranging from 5 inches in size all the way up to 3 - 4 feet up in size.  He will also be featuring an assortment of tropicals that will sure to please the special Mom in your life.  Mr. Thrapsimis tells us that last year, despite the dark clouds of the nation's economic recession hanging over us, he was pleasantly surprised by the brisk business that he saw during the Mother's Day rush last year.

"It all goes to show you," Mr. Thrapsimis says, "through both good times and bad times, you'll always have your mother, and what better way to show your appreciation to her than to remember her on her special day."

Nick tells us that he is listed as one of Google's favorites, and you can access a 10% discount coupon to use on purchases.  For more information, please call (914)-909-6393.

Now, when you think of Mother's Day, your first thoughts may not be that of eyewear, but Arthur Kalichstein, owner of Trapp Opticals,  located at 4 North Broadway, is offering customers a 20% discount on a complete eyeglass purchase if you mention to him that you saw this article in Patch.  For more information, please call (914)-332-4074.

Next door,  we were greeted by Stephen DeCristofaro at Harnik Brothers Jewelers.  Also part of the welcoming committee was the owner's 2 1/2 year old boxer Joba.  Mr. DeCristofaro showed us an elegant array of jewelry, including feather designed sparkle rope chains, rhodium plated, which he explains prevents the pieces from ever tarnishing with age.  If your special mom is a sports enthusiast, you can dazzle her with either a New York Yankees or New York Giants logo bracelet encased in a heart shape design.

We were also shown a collection of Frederic Duclos silver and gold accented mosaic design necklaces that range in price from $100 - $600, but mostly fall into the $200 - $300 price range.  DeCrisofaro carries possibly the largest collection of fine watches I have ever seen.  He sells Movado, Swiss Army, Citizen and Patek Philippe watches.  He also sells pre-owned Rolex timepieces.  We also marvelled at the collection of Hidalgo brand rings that were on display.  Mr. DeCristofaro happily tells us that if any customer mentions this article to him, he will accord them a 20% discount.  For more information, please contact him at (914)-631-3224,  6 North Broadway, Tarrytown, NY

Continuing on our travel along Main Street, we stopped by and talked to the proprietors of  --

Juliana Rose, Antique and Personal Gift Shop, at 9 Main Street.  Readers of Patch will be given a 10% discount on their Mother's Day purchases.  They can be reached at (914)-366-8266.

We had a delightful conversation with Virginia Arpiarian of The Curio Shop, 13 Main Street, Tarrytown.  The shop carries antiques, fine art and jewelry, but specializes in Bakelite Jewelry.  She told us that there is currently an exhibit of Bakelite Jewelry at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers now through June 11.  She invited our readers to tour the exhibit and on your way home, select a gift for Mom at her shop, and you'll be given a 10% discount.  For more information, you may contact her at (914)-366-8410.

Now, that we have gifted Mom with jewelry, a new hairdo, and possibly an antique or two, it is now time to take her out to a Mother's Day brunch or dinner.  There are many fine restaurants in the Tarrytown area, most notably Lefteris Gyro, at 1 North Broadway. The Curio Shop's Virginia Arpiarian describes the Greek Cuisine eatery as 'Numero Uno' and heartily recommends it.   They can be reached at (914)-524-9687.

The hostess at Horsefeathers, 94 North Broadway, proudly proclaims that their burgers and salads can not be beaten.  For more information, please call (914)-631-6606.

Finally, if you would like to treat Mom to an evening of live entertainment, The Tarrytown Music Hall, 13 Main Street, Tarrytown, NY is offering three special performances.  The first of which will be on Saturday, May 8, when the Westchester Symphonic Winds will perform with Curt Ebersole, conductor/music director. This volunteer adult community wind ensemble, now in its 22nd year, provides opportunities for players and audiences alike to enjoy the finest music for winds/percussion by award-winning composers, along with the area's finest soloists.

All season long they will be celebrating the most popular works of John Barnes Chance, with two works by this award-winning composer on each program.
Featured works for this concert include Elegy and Symphony No. 2 by John Barnes Chance, and Casy at the Bat by Randol Alan Bass, with narration by Tom Morehouse. CHILDREN UNDER 10 FREE

Friday evening, May 14:   Leon Russell and The new Riders of the Purple Sage will take the stage. The ultimate rock & roll session man, Leon Russell's long and storied career includes collaborations with a virtual who's who of music icons spanning from Jerry Lee Lewis to Phil Spector to the Rolling Stones. A similar eclecticism and scope also surfaced in his solo work, which couched his charmingly gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel. His classic "A Song for You" is a mainstay on rock radio.

For most of the early '70s, the New Riders of the Purple Sage were the most successful offshoot of The Grateful Dead. They've attracted a considerable audience through their association with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart and have been on constant tours of the world for the last 40 years.

On Tuesday evening, May 18, there will be a special benefit concert to support The Mental Health Association of Westchester County, Inc. Performing will be Hillary Johnson, who  is a 20 year old singer/songwriter with the voice of an idol and the chops of a savant. Her music has a timeless energy that captures both youth and age old wisdom, defying expectations. Bringing a remarkably soulful and fearless honesty to her music, Hillary captures audiences with her unique sound and presence. Her voice radiates, and her melodies and expressive lyrics set her apart from the familiar sound of her established contemporaries. Evan Watson is a 24 year old singer/songwriter and resident of Tarrytown, NY. Saturated in the blues and folk traditions of America, he writes accessible songs that flirt with pop melody lines, but always deliver a heart-felt execution. Evan's live performance is riddled with soul, roots, and a lot of guitar solos. Evan and his band provide a refreshing, rootsy and overall exciting live experience.

Performances will be at 8pm.  You may order tickets online at www.tarrytownmusichall.org or by calling 1-(877)-840-0457.  For additional information, you may call the Music Hall directly at (914)-631-3390.

Whatever you decide to do for your Mom, all of us here at Patch, wish you and the special lady in your life the happiest of Mother's Days!

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
