Capping off Independence Day, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown put on their annual Fourth of July fireworks display from the General Motors property.
The show kicked off right as fireworks in Rockland County were finishing up, and Ossining's display was still going strong. The explosions lasted about 20 minutes.
Fireworks are undeniably the symbol of this country's freedom and independence. But as municipal budgets have tightened during the last few years, this year's display was almost cut in half.
Due to the tough economy, and the possibility of a closed Pierson Park, Tarrytown was going to unfund fireworks this year, but opted to join Sleepy Hollow at the last minute.
The villages, together, paid over $12,000 for the display, and even more in overtime costs. Tarrytown estimated it would have over $7,000 in overtime costs.
