swearing in ceremony Wed at Springhurst elementary school for Greenburgh officials

30 years ago, when I first was elected to the Westchester County Board of Legislators, I began a tradition --of being sworn into office at an elementary school. The tradition continues on Wednesday, January 8, 2014.  A swearing in ceremony will be held for newly elected town officials at the Springhurst Elementary School in Dobbs Ferry at 9 AM. The newly re-elected town officials besides me  are Councilwoman Diana Juettner, Councilman Francis Sheehan, Town Clerk Judith Beville and Receiver of Taxes Anne Povella.

At 7:30 PM  on Wednessday, January 8th, the Greenburgh Town  Board will hold another ceremonial swearing in ceremony at Town Hall  -- the first action of the new year. Jonathan Perry, who greets residents at the front desk lobby will be presented as the official town greeter for the town.

Over the years I have talked to former students who told me that they remember holding the bible and participating in the ceremony. The goal: make government relevant to young people. Encourage their future participation by including them in the process. At the ceremony on Wednesday morning, students will have the chance to ask questions about town government and to express their views about local issues.  It's our hope that the students who attend will remember this experience and hopefully get involved when they get older.
