The Computer Corner – Introduction to All Things Computer

Ever wonder how a computer works? What are all those parts inside? How do I get a job working with computers? All this and more in The Computer Corner! where we discuss all things computer.

Welcome to the Computer Corner.

My name is Paul Belcastro, and I have been working with all types of computer systems for the past 25 years.

This blog is a project I have had in mind for quite some time. I have always enjoyed teaching; in fact for a while I worked for several companies and a college teaching computer science. So when I read that The Patch provided a community site, I thought it would be great to create a weekly post that would demonstrate how computer systems work, what they are used for, and how you can get the most of your PC, laptop, tablet or smart-phone.

These posts will be geared to anyone that wants to know about a computer and how it works. No prior computer or programming experience is necessary. We are going to start at the beginning, and work our way up. I hope to make these posts informative and fun, but not terribly technical. They will be geared to anyone, young or old, technophiles or techno-challenged.

Over the coming weeks, I will be reviewing all things computer, from the most fundamental (we'll look inside a PC and see the various parts that make them tick) to the large number of uses for computers (hint: there are computers in places that you would not imagine)  and how computers are constantly evolving and impacting our lives.

We will also examine what are the current and future job prospects for computers, a subject that is very important to those wanting to pursue a career in one of the many fields associated with computer systems. Whether you want to learn about programming, or how to work with the physical computer hardware, or if how they communicate interests you, we will be looking into all aspects of computer jobs.

And as we go along, I will always want your feedback and questions. Did I say something that may have been confusing, or {gasp!} wrong? Do you have a question about a topic that was discussed, or want more information? Or do you have a topic that you want to talk about in the future? In any event, I will be happy to review and try to answer questions or get you more information.

When I can, I will post links to websites that contain more information about the topics in that week's blog.

So get ready: we will soon be off exploring computers, from both the inside and out, from what the pieces look like to how they talk around the world, and what you can do with them, and what they can do for you.

Thanks for tuning in. More to follow....
