Westchester Residents Treated Like 2nd Class Citizens by Con Ed

con ed

Hurricane Irene left a good portion of Greenburgh and Westchester out of power. Con Ed issued a press release after the storm indicating that most of their NYC customers would have their power restored by Tuesday night and Westchester customers would get their power restored two days later – by late Thursday night.

I realize that Con Ed cannot restore everyones power immediately after a storm but question why Westchester ratepayers are treated like 2nd class citizens. After every storm Westchester customers wait much longer to have power restored than our NYC neighbors. We pay the same rates as NYC customers pay, but don't get treated equally. Why should NYC customers always get their power restored first – a few days before Westchester customers?

My home phone is ringing off the hook with calls from senior citizens and disabled residents who experience real hardships whenever there are power outages. I think it would be fairer if Con Ed treated all of their customers the same, and if they would spread their crews around their service area until power is restored to all.

Another option: they should rotate the order of service restorations – during one outage NYC should get service restored first and Westchester second. The second outage Westchester gets power restored first and NYC gets it second.

I work for a power company (Not Con-Ed) and I have a good idea of why they would get NYC back quicker. It isn't because Westchester would be considered "second class", but because each area has it's own line shop. If Westchester has a lot more outages than NYC, then it would make sense that NYC would get restored in 3 days rather than 5 days. I am sure after the assigned crews in NYC were finished restoring their outages, then they would come up to help the Westchester crews. This is how most utilities work.
Lets put it this way; if NYC got hit with a tornado and Westchester had minimal damage, then we would be looking at an opposite scenario where the Westchester workers would restore our power first, then move down to NYC to help support them, so in a way, they kind of do rotate. Remember, just because it is the same company doesn't mean crews are located in a central area...

I didn't realize the delay was caused by the village; I live in the Landmark and haven't had electricity since Sunday evening. All of our appliances are electric so I can't even boil water. : - (

i live on Croton Avenue (near Hamilton Ave in Tarrytown) and I am shocked that we still have no power! I grew up in Vermont and we frequently lost power but never for more than a few hours. We are now going on 72 hours without power. How can this happen? and where are the utility workers? i haven't seen one truck.

Oh, nanny nanny poo poo. 2nd class citizens, what makes you feel like you are any better than anyone else? Because you pay high taxes? lol... you are living in a aging infrastructure, homes that were built in the 1800's, 120 year old trees towering over powerlines. Get used to it and don't think that just because you are located in the highest taxed county in the country that you should be treated any differently than anyone else. Utilities are paid for by consumers. You want your utility bills to go up 30%-40% NO, of course not. So stop complaining, deal with it. Oh, and fire Mike Blau.
