Why Do Snow Plows Block Driveways with Snow After You Shovel?

It's a gripe shared around the country. Any remedies? Please share.

DAILY GRIPE--SNOW TRUCKS DUMPING SNOW IN FRONT OF DRIVEWAYS...IT'S A
NATIONAL PROBLEM AFTER EVERY STORM!....EXPERIENCES FROM OTHER COMMUNITIES AROUND THE NATION

Every municipal official in the nation gets the same complaints after every major snow storm. Municipal snow trucks pile big piles of snow right back in front of the driveway just after the driveway was cleared.  It's frustrating. It's aggravating. But, unfortunately, I haven't found a community anywhere in the United States that has been able to avoid this problem.  If you are aware of any community anywhere that is able to avoid having trucks piling of snow right in front of driveways please advise. My cell is 914-438-1343 and my e mail is pfeiner@greenburghny.com.

After the snow stops, you might want to wait to finish your clearing of the snow until the town finishes our work.  This way you'll avoid double work!  A story CBS Philadelphia did provides some other tips.  I am also sharing some commentaries from other localities around the nation- that have the same experiences we do in Greenburgh.

PAUL FEINER, Greenburgh Town Supervisor

--

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – So, when that next snowfall hits the region in the coming weeks, how can you prevent that municipal snow plow from ruining the work you just did clearing out your driveway access to the street?

There’s probably nothing more frustrating than shoveling out the driveway and clearing a nice apron area to the street to pull out… And then, along comes the snow plow and pushes a big pile of snow right back in front of the driveway.

“A lot of people don’t realize it that the snow plows we use are just the big
dump trucks,” says Don Cannon, Lower Merion Township’s director of public works. “They’re not like the plows in the parking lot where they can articulate the plow back and forth and move the snow one way or the other. What we say is that snow is loaded on the front of that plow and it just continually comes off — driver’s side to passenger’s side — or left to right towards the gutter line.”

But Cannon says there is a way to avoid having the municipal plow block your driveway.

“If you shovel out a space — looking at your house to the right side of your driveway — that would allow for the amount of snow that’s on that plow to be, say, discharged in that area before it goes past your driveway that’s that much less snow that goes in front of your driveway when the plow comes down.”

Cannon insists many plow drivers are sensitive to the work suburban residents do to dig out.

Why do they plow snow in front of my driveway?  Bay Village, Ohio

Snow plow operators do not place snow in driveways on purpose. There is no practical way for the snow plow operator to cut off the windrow of snow when crossing a driveway. This problem is especially acute in cul-de-sacs because of the space. One thing you can do to reduce the amount of snow that is plowed in front of your driveway is to place as much of the snow as possible to the right side of your drive as you face the street.

TopQ: Why did the City block my driveway or bury my sidewalk when they plowed my street?

City of Lafayette - Frequently Asked Questions
Problems may arise for residents when snow piles up on sidewalks and driveways are blocked because of snowplow activities. We try very hard to plow so as not to block driveways, but this is not always possible. The most efficient method to plow snow is to push it to the side of the road. Plowing to the center of the road would leave your driveway open, but it would not provide enough room for fire trucks and other emergency vehicles to operate.

Wicomico County Department of Public Works, Roads Division

1. Why do the plows block my driveway with snow?

The primary goal of plowing is to remove snow from streets so that the road is open to vehicular traffic. Plowing pushes snow to the side from the middle of the street naturally, and, unfortunately, this results in snow piling up in front of driveways. Snowplows typically push snow to the right of the travel lane and the driver has no control over this. Also, the driver cannot stop or raise the plow at each driveway as this would leave a pile of snow in the roadway. Residents are advised to wait until the plow has been through their road prior to cleaning their driveway and mailbox area. If drifting or more snow occurs the plows may have to make multiple passes on a road at a later time to keep the road clear. If possible, plow drivers will try to prevent excessive blockages at driveways but at times this is not possible. Please remember that the clearing of driveway and mailbox areas is the responsibility of the resident.

whoever owns the sidewalks should shovel the sidewalks.it is almost a negative to even have a sidewalk. not everyone does. i never use mine and everyone i see walks in the street all year long.
what is the argument the town makes for deeming you responsible for their sidewalk and the snow that they plowed onto it.va few times a snow storm what if i have a heart attack shoveling their sidewalk and the snow they plowed onto it quite frankly i an not sure i could be held responsible for not shoveling the sw even if they did not plow tons upon ton of snow onto it judges work for the same town that would be prosecuting me so they can't be involved right..no conflict there i guess. what about sending a refund check to homeowners who have to pay someone to do it county and or towns should pass a law saying if you are in business and plow driveways you have to include sidewalk too,,at least the width of 1 shovel. homeowners submitting checks,cc statement or proof of work done should get 50% minimum refund from town. 10 yrs in jail for plowing and not reporting income from it.is there even that much room in jail.

People who don't shuffle their sidewalks should be fined. When people have to walk in the street, so they don't break their necks slipping on your sidewalk, they then risk getting hit by a car. It's usually the absentee landlords that don't bother. They use Nyack to make money, and won't even cooperate with our quality of life laws.

who shuffles their sidewalk
how do you do that but they walk in the street all year. they break their neck or i have a heart attack. I live on corner not only do i have a sidewalk i have 2 2x the $ for me I will give town easement to shovel no one slipped in 50 yrs what are the odds I

Move back to the City, case closed.

No surprise, Feiner pushed this topic.
I spent 1 1/2 hours today, using a snow blower, shoveling, cleaning off two cars, came inside, had a cup off coffee, took two Ibuprofen and all was fine. My driveway is 186 Ft., downhill (maybe uphill for SOME of you) and is windy. I had about 12" of snow. My GOD people, really, how many times does this happen? 3, MAYBE 4 times a year? As far as the heart attacks, hire some kid down the street. I used to make $40-$60 on a snowy day (1982 +/-).
ASleepyBoy February 10, 2013 at 04:57 am
$100 - $140 on a snowy day in 1994 +/- ......
Only people who came by today were literally sitting in the bed of a pickup yelling out to people they saw if they needed help. What ever happened to ringing the doorbell and offering your services?

I guess Stephany doesn't walk around Nyack too much, because if she did she would know how treacheous the icy sidewalks can be. I am a walker. I have a dog, and take long walks every day. Trust me, it is very scary to walk down icy sidewalks that were never shoveled. Many people, like myself, choose the street instead, and that is an accident waiting to happen, too. There are plenty of guys around who'd shovel for a fee. You can even get numbers from the Village Hall.

How in the world are they supposed to clear the entire road without pushing snow into a driveway? I dont understand what people think they should do with the snow? If they had to carefully avoid EVERY driveway in Yorktown, streets wouldnt be clear for a good week afterwards. Does it suck to clear off the end of the driveway? YES, but it doesnt happen every day, so get over it. Or move to a warmer climate. As for sidewalks- when we bought a house in Yorktown, we avoided buying one with a sidewalk because we didnt want to be responsible. If you made the choice to buy or live in a house with a sidewalk, then you have to take care of it, simple as that. You know that if the plows put all this snow on the side of the road instead of on the sidewalk (making some roads impassable by two cars at the same time) the same people would complain about that. Its a no win.

The village of Port Chester Highway Department and all their bosses should be ashamed of themselves!!! The roads in Port Chester are deplorable! The clearing was a shoddy job. They are a sheet of ice today, and crossing over into Greenwich, the roads are fine. What's Port Chester's excuse? There is no reason for this, there was just as much snow in CT as in NY! Shame, shame!!!!!!

"Why do the plows block my driveway with snow?"
All snow plow drivers hate you and what you to work as hard as they do!

Occupy your driveway... LOL
Firstly, this topic is not a Joke.. on the contrary it is quite important. Anyone with aged parents or responsiblities to a family knows that having access to transportation is not a joke. Anyone saying otherwise, likely has no kids or parents to care for.. etc!! lol that being said..................................................... Snow plows cannot slow for each house.. would take three times the amount of time....... Legal or not, my mother insists the only way is to park your car in front of your driveway, she seems to believe they will go around the car instead of leaving snow in the middle of the road.... It's a crap shoot but I think it may be a great occupy your driveway attempt... !! LOL

Into the 60's we thought of snow as a blast; we got sleds for Chrstmas, and couldn't wait to get outside to play in the snow.

Mt. Kisco streets were in perfect condition yesterday. The highway dept. guys did an amazing job as always. Of course there's gonna be snow piled near everyone's driveway, but that's what snowblowers are for.

Does this guy really think anyone living outside of Greenburg cares what he has to say!!!

hire someone to manually shovel your walk or driveway and they slip and hurt themselves;who gets sued.it's your property.btw i have 42 houses on my block and none, not even one, shovels their walk,,,or ever did. what would you do if you were me. and i remember winters as recent as less then 10 years ago where it snowed a lot more than 3-4 times. a lot more

Stupendous idea that Tracy KC posted on Feb 10th. "Occupy your driveway." Sometimes we do get to read posts that make you think. Thank you, Tracy for the idea!

Brilliant! everyone pull their cars out into the road so they can block the snowplow from putting snow into their driveways!! Can u people get any dumber?
Deejay February 11, 2013 at 01:52 pm
Begin shoveling at the end of your driveway and extend into the street a couple of feet. Every time the plow makes a pass clear the end again. It doesn't eliminate the problem, but it's a lot easier shoveling smaller amounts than the huge drifts of compacted snow that come if you wait till the end.

Widening the area you shovel at the end of your driveway also helps combined with NOT pilling the snow you shoveled in the road where they will just push it back in (or pile it on the opposite side of your driveway from the direction the plow generally comes provided you do not have a neighbor with a driveway that could be impacted)
Sami February 11, 2013 at 03:24 pm
Or you can just wait until the street has been plowed to shovel. That is what we do and never get plowed back in.
I understand that we have elderly people in our communities, etc., but snow removal from your property really is the homeowners issue. Yes, it is difficult and hard work, but that is why there are plow companies and other options for snow removal if you cant do it yourself. Yes, it can be expensive, but that is just a cost associated with living in the climate we do and should be an expected one.

What I hate are the people who shovel their driveways and throw the snow in the street! Just after the poor plow guys have cleaned it. I also hate the dopes that don't clean the snow off of their cars and have it it cascade off onto the street or, worse, onto me when I'm following behind.

I learned my lesson a few years ago, when I didn't clean the roof of my car off. I found myself braking at a stop light and the entire roof of snow found its way onto my windshield. Very dangerous.
john slivin February 11, 2013 at 07:14 pm
This has got to be the most ridiculous blog I have ever scene.....there is no solution for this they plow until the snow is removed from street as they do this it will always disperse in from of driveway or any other spot that is directly in path of plow....it is what it is.....if it really bothers you that much buy a snow blower or pay someone to shovel it for you....then you don't have to cry....unreal this is why this country is headed downhill everyone is soft
Chris Clement February 11, 2013 at 07:16 pm
Correction: I apparently mis-read Tracy KC's post about blocking driveway with car. I did not realize she suggested putting car into street and block driveway. Even blocking your own driveway is illegal and you can get a summons for this.
I thought it was suggested to put the front or rear of he car at the very END of a driveway, where it meets the road.
