Healthy Life Series Continues in May at Phelps in Sleepy Hollow

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for May follows:

Thursday, May 1 and Friday, May 9 - Speech-Language Screening for Preschool Children Are you concerned about your child's speech and language development? If so, call for a fre e speech-language screening with Kim M. Ventimiglia, MS, CCC-SLP, an experienced pediatric speech-language pathologist at the Speech & Hearing Center at Phelps, 777 North Broadway, Suite 303. From 1:00 - 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 1 and from 10:30 - 11:30 am on Friday, May 9. Appointments are required. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday, May 5 - Look Good . . . Feel Better This free 2-hour program teaches beauty techniques to women going through cancer treatment. Includes a makeup and hair consultation and a complimentary makeup kit and wig to take home. Held the first Monday of the month from 6 - 8 pm at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 755 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow in room 545. Registration is required. Tuesday, May 6 - Calling All Singers! Whether you are a professionally trained or avocational singer, this participatory workshop instructs you on safe vocal warm-ups and optimal vocal hygiene w ith Leah Ross-Kugler, MD, CCC-SLP, Voice Rehabilitation Specialist. Wednesday, May 7 - Mind Games is a free activity and a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning by playing board games and computer games that stimulate memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning. Wednesdays, May 7 and 21 - Blood Pressure Screenings Conducted the first and third Wednesday mornings of every month at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow from 9:30 - 11:30 am in the Walkway Conference Room. Thursday, May 8 - Ovarian Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment This discussion will include an overview of ovarian cancer, from diagnosis to treatment, and will cover new advances with Nancy E. Mills, MD, Attending Physician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Sleepy Hollow. Thursday, May 8 - Osteoporosis Support The Phelps Osteoporosis Center offers free monthly educational programs for osteoporosis patients the second Thursday of the month. Attendees will become more knowledgeable about osteoporosis, learn nutritional guidelines to improve bone health, practice bone-strengthening exercise routines, and develop techniques to compensate for skeletal limitations. Thursday, May 8 - Swallow Screening Do you sometimes feel food or liquid go down the "wrong pipe"? Does food get stuck? Do you have pain when you swallow? Do you experience food or liquid coming back up? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should attend this free swallow screening clinic. Thursdays, May 8 and 22 - Afternoon Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets from 2 - 3:30 pm in the Phelps Hospice office, located on the Phelps campus in the James House. Monday, May 12 -- Something Is Wrong with My Hearing Aid! Care and Troubleshooting Anyone who has purchased hearing aids knows they are a significant investment that can really improve your quality of life. When hearing aids break down it can become frustrating for the hearing-impaired person and their loved ones. This session with Susan D. Reilly, MS, CCC-A, Audiologist, will provide attendees with information and hands-on experience cleaning and maintaining all styles of hearing aids. Knowing how to clean and care for your hearing aids will help keep them in good working order. Thursday, May 15 - Empowering Women to Overcome Bladder and Pelvic Floor Problems An educational seminar for women suffering from incontinence, overactive bladder, bladder pain, pelvic organ prolapse a nd a variety of problems involving the female pelvic floor with Dr. Sue Zhou, MD, FACOG, urogynecologist at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow in the Boardroom from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Thursday, May 15 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly, except for August and December, 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Monday, May 19 - Help for Dizziness and Balance Problems Are symptoms of dizziness or imbalance affecting your life and the activities you participate in? Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20 - Defensive Driving A two-evening certification program that lowers insurance premiums, reduces violation points, and sharpens driving skills.
