Healthy Life Series Continues in November

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for November follows:

Monday, November 4 - Look Good . . . Feel Better Look Good . . . Feel Better is a free program at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center for women going through c ancer treatment that teaches them beauty techniques to help manage the appearance-related side effects of their treatment. Makeup kits donated by cosmetic companies are given to each participant to take home. The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, The National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. Presented by Sheri Silver, cosmetologist, from 6 - 8 pm in Room 545 of the Medical Services Building at Phelps, 755 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Advance registration is required. Tuesdays, November 5 and 19 - Senior Steps Part of the Vitality program at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Senior Steps includes health screenings, nutrition education, exercise and special events for seniors. The club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 10:00-11:30 am in various locations throughout the hospital. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North B roadway, Sleepy Hollow. Wednesday, November 6 - Mind Games Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing Boggle, Set, the Memory Game, Sporkle and many other games in group, team and individual formats. Thursdays, November 7, 14, and 21 (final day) - Phelps Farmers Market at the Park Visit the Farmers Market at Phelps from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm every Thursday through November 21 to purchase farm-fresh produce, meats and cheeses, baked goods, prepared foods and more. The market is held in the Rockwood Hall area of Rockefeller State Park at the end of Route 117. Convenient parking is available across the street in the Rockwood Hall parking lot. Thursdays, November 7 and November 14 - Sound Advice: Getting the Most from Your Hearing Aids (2-part workshop) Did you know that people with hearing aids who participate in an auditory rehabilitation program are more satisfied with their hearing aids than people who don't? The Donald R. Reed Speech & Hearing Center at Phelps has been providing auditory rehabilitation for individuals who purchase their hearing aids at Phelps for more than 6 years. It is the only program of its kind in Westchester. As a special offering, this 2-part workshop is being offered to anyone with hearing aids. Attendance at both sessions is strongly recommended and space is limited. Come with your "hearing partner" and learn, share and laugh with others. Workshop will be led by Susan D. Reilly, MS, CCC-A, audiologist, and James Edler, EdD, experienced hearing aid user. In the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 N. Thursdays, November 7 and 21 - Bereavement Support Group An ongoing support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2 - 3:30 pm at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow in the James House. Led by Bess Steiger, LCSW, bereavement coordinator. Suggested donation: $10 per session. Call 914-366-3325 for information.

Tuesday, November 12 - Better Breathers Club is an informal interactive support group for people with breathing disorders. Amy Hendler, MS, RD, CDN, will lead this presentation on nutrition for those with lung disease and tips to prevent overeating during the holidays. Tuesday, November 12 - Treatment and Management o f Snoring and Sleep Apnea A discussion about the causes of sleep apnea and how it is diagnosed. Michael Bergstein, MD, otolaryngologist and Surgical Director of the Phelps Sleep Center, will lead the group. Thursday, November 14 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly, except for August and December, 8:30-10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Wednesday and Thursday, November 20 and 21- Defensive Driving
