October Healthy Life Programs at Phelps Memorial Hospital

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for October follows:

Tuesdays, October 1 and 15 - Senior Steps Part of the Vitality Initiative at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Senior Steps includes health screenings, nutrition ed ucation, exercise and special events for seniors. The club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 10:00-11:30 am in various locations throughout the hospital. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Wednesday, October 2 - Mind Games Mind Games is a free activity on the first Wednesday of the month and a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing Boggle, Set, the Memory Game, Sporcle and many other games in a group format. Thursdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 - Phelps Farmers Market at the Park Visit the Farmers Market at Phelps from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm every Thursday through mid-November to purchase farm-fresh produce, meats and cheeses, baked goods, prepared foods and more. Friday, October 4- Help for Dizziness and Balance Problems Are symptoms of dizziness or imbalance affecting your life and the activities you participate in? Learn about videonystagmography (VNG) testing, which helps determine the cause of the dizziness, and vestibular rehabilitation, which helps reduce dizziness and balance problems. The discussion will be led by Sheetal Sheenoy, OTR/L, occupational therapist certified in vestibular rehabilitation, and Swapna Nataraj, AuD, CCC-A, audiologist. Saturday, October 5 - CarFit Event for Older Drivers Attend a free, 20-minute educational session designed to help improve the "fit" of your car for safety and comfort, participate in conversations about driving safety, and link with local resources so you can continue to drive for as long as safely possible. Members of Phelps' Occupational Therapy Department will provide information to ensure the safest "fit" for older drivers and their vehicles. CarFit was created by the American Society of Aging in collaboration with AARP, AAA and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Monday, October 7 - Look Good . . . Feel Better is a free program at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center for women going through cancer treatment that teaches them beauty techniques to help manage the appearance-related side effects of their treatment. The program includes a hair consultation with a professional stylist and a makeup consultation with a cosmetologist. Attendees can take home a complimentary wig and a makeup kit.The program is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, and the Professional Beauty Association. Tuesday, October 8 - Better Breathers Club is an informal interactive support group for people with breathing disorders. Come and learn about the many free opportunities, information and workshops offered by the American Lung Association for indivi duals with lung disease. Light refreshments will be served. Presented by Serena Arabito, American Lung Association.

Tuesday, October 8 - Controlling the Pain of Arthritic Knees Without Undergoing Surgery If you have arthritis of the knee, you have probably thought about whether you might have to have surgery. Orthopedic surgeon J. Robert Seebacher, MD, will discuss a non-surgical therapy that often helps people maintain active lifestyles while postponing - or eliminating - the need for surgery. Learn how injections and exercise can enable reconditioning and reduction of inflammation and pain. Thursday, October 10 - The Breakfast Club is a series of free breakfast meetings designed especially for seniors. Each session includes breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly, except for August and December, 8:30 - 10:30 am in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Monday, October 14 - Movement Therapy for Parkinson's Patients The LSVT BIG program is a physical therapy program designed to improve the major motor skills of people with Parkinso n's disease by retraining their movements. The exercises, led by LSVT BIG-certified physical therapists, Leslie Sims, MSPT, LSVT-certified and Jennifer Teyfel-Freestone, PT, DPT, GCS, CLT-LANA, CSCS, specifically address an increase in motion of the arms and legs, as well as turning of the trunk and walking. The program is designed to increase walking speed, improve balance and enhance quality of life. Tuesday evenings beginning October 15 - Evening Bereavement Support Group This 8-week bereavement support group for adults meets Tuesday evenings beginning October 15. Meetings are held in Room 225 of the 755 building on the Phelps Memorial Hospital Center campus, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Attendance at all 8 sessions is recommended. Tuesday, October 15 - New Treatment for Asthma Sufferers Learn about bronchial thermoplasty, the only non-drug treatment option available for asthmatics 18 years of age and older who are still symptomatic, despite use of currently available medications. The session takes place at 6pm in the Auditorium at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow with Laurence C. Miller, MD, pulmonologist. Bronchial thermoplasty has been shown to reduce the severity of asthma attacks, visits to the emergency room, and time lost from work, school and other daily activities. Fridays beginning October 18 (six-week series) - Living Well Program for Seniors with Chronic Health Problems A series of six workshops designed to help seniors manage their chronic health problems. The workshops are gi ven by specially trained volunteers who provide participants with strategies to modify their behavior. Techniques are shared to handle pain, frustration and fatigue. Participants also learn how to use medications correctly and better communicate with their families and healthcare providers. Developed at Stanford University's School of Medicine, Living Well is funded by New York State's Office for the Aging through the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services. Begins Friday, October 18 from 10 am - 12:30 pm and continues on October 25, November 1, 8, 15 and 22 at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Registration is required. Monday and Tuesday, October 21 and 22 - Defensive Driving A two-evening certification program lowers insurance premiums, reduces violation points, and sharpens driving skills. Wednesday, October 23 - Stand Up and Be Heard! As we age, our voices age too. Pitch and tone changes can occur. The voice may sound weak, breathy or hoarse. Many alterations of voice that come with age can be addressed to improve one's quality of life. During this interactive workshop, led by Leah Ross-Kugler, MS, CCC/SLP, voice rehabilitation specialist, you will learn and perform group vocal exercises that help increase the power and clarity of your voice. The workshop will be from 12noon - 1pm in the C-Level Classroom at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Thursday, October 24 - Speech Therapy for Parkinson's Patients: Think LOUD, Speak LOUD Join graduates of LSVT LOUD and learn about this intensive speech therapy program for individuals with Parkinson's disease. Monday, October 28 - Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) - Silent Reflux Screening Changes in voice, throat clearing, mucus in the throat with discomfort, chronic cough not responding to medications, and swallowing problems are all symptoms of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR). In addition, chronic asthma, recurrent sinusitis, dental disease and even cancer can all be caused by or exacerbated by LPR. LPR is not Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Craig H.
