A driver fell asleep and plowed his vehicle into a London Plane sycamore on Route 9 this morning.
The accident occurred near the intersection of Route 9 and Farrignton Avenue at about 5:20 a.m. A large Chevrolet Sport Van, heading south, crossed the center line and slammed into a tree near the entrance to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
According to emergency responders on the scene, the adult driver was alert and conscious when he was taken out of the vehicle, and admitted that he had fallen asleep at the wheel. The man was transported to Westchester Medical Center by the Sleepy Hollow Volunteer Ambulance Corps for further evaluation – his vehicle did not have airbags.
The van sustained irreparable damage to its entire front half. Inside the passenger cab, the steering wheel also appeared significantly disported and could have forcefully struck the driver on impact.
The Sleepy Hollow Fire Department secured the scene along side the Sleepy Hollow Police Department. At 6:00 a.m. the vehicle was being towed away and traffic was fully reopened on Route 9.
