Update: Cops ID Driver in High Speed DWI

Drunk driver chased from Hauppauge, crashed into truck in Syosset, cops said.

Police have identified the driver charged in a high speed DWI that ended in a crash in Syosset Thursday morning.

David Thompson, 32, of Far Rockaway, faces DWI, reckless driving, and speeding charges after police say they engaged him in a high speed chase across county lines and into a Syosset construction site. Cops have said Thompson was drunk at the time of the chase.

Just after midnight Thursday, Suffolk highway patrol officers in Hauppauge clocked Thompson's car driving at over 100 miles per hour heading westbound on the LIE, cops said.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which kept driving despite police efforts. Highway officers chased the Thompson from Exit 56 in Hauppauge into Nassau County.

When the car reached Exit 43 in Syosset, cops said Thompson tried to maneuver around traffic on the service road by reentering the highway. It was there that Thompson reportedly crashed into a tractor trailer and then into a police vehicle. Police were then able to apprehend Thompson, who sustained a minor injury to the hand.

Officers and the driver of the truck Thompson reportedly hit escaped unharmed, cops said.

Thompson is charged with DWI, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and speeding.
