Update: Woman Killed Was Longtime Volunteer

Police say the driver was backing up his pickup truck at Phelps Hospital when he struck the 81-year-old Croton woman.

Update, Thursday, 11:27 a.m.: The hospital has confirmed reports that Joan Hartney, 81, who died hours after a truck hit her in the Phelps parking lot, was a longtime volunteer there.

Mary Sernatinger, Director, Marketing/Communications for Phelps shared this statement on behalf of the hospital:

We are deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic accident that occurred on our hospital grounds yesterday morning that involved a member of our volunteer staff, Joan Hartney. Our hearts go out Joan’s family. She was a wonderful woman and a valued volunteer at Phelps for many years.

From Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Gregory Camp:

On Wednesday March 20, 2013 at about 8:54 am the Sleepy Hollow Police Department received a call reporting a pedestrian struck by a truck at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, between the 755 Building and the Parking Garage. Officers responded and the Sleepy Hollow Ambulance was dispatched and responded.

The pedestrian appears to have been struck by a pickup truck, equipped with plow and sander. The vehicle, registered to Phelps Hospital, was being operated by one of their employees.

The pedestrian, an 81 year old female, received trauma to the lower extremities as well as a head injury. She was transported by ambulance to the emergency room.

An investigation is being conducted by the Sleepy Hollow Police Department, with assistance of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety Accident Investigation Unit.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
