Man Injured When Backhoe Falls in Ditch

Sleepy Hollow fire department, ambulance and police officials are gathered around the scene of a ditch with a damaged backhoe lodged in it where a man suffered injuries Thursday afternoon.

Pocantico Road between Howard and Elms streets is closed with emergency vehicles as of about 2 p.m. when the call came in.

Assistant fire chief Patrick Haggerty said a worker was using a small backhoe to excavate a ditch at the property under renovation at 51 Pocantico. As the machine started sliding into the hole, the man jumped out into the soft, wet dirt, possibly breaking his leg, Haggerty said.

The man was transported to Westchester Medical Center.

By 2:45 p.m. officials and volunteers were awaiting the arrival of towing equipment to hoist the machine out. They anticipated that part of the operation would go fast.
