NYSP Target Distracted Drivers, Make 31 Arrests

The following information is from New York State Police. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

New York State Police targeted "distracted drivers" in a six-hour enforcement detail yesterday on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Westchester, according to a press release.

Police subsequently arrested 20 drivers who allegedly violated the "Move Over Law," which—since January 1 of this year—requires drivers "use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle that displays red and/or white emergency lighting," as well as move from the lane on roads with multiple lanes, if they can do so safely.

Additionally, NYSP arrested two people for using their cell phones, four for speeding, three for violating seat belt laws and performed eight additional vehicle and traffic arrests.

Thirty-seven total tickets were issued during the enforcement.

All depends on the circumstances. If you are doing excessive speed and talking on the telephone. I imagine that could lead to an arrest.

EVERYTHING is an 'arrestable' offense. A ticket is technically an arrest and a release, with a promise to appear in court. You are more likely to be arrested for a minor offense such as passing a stop sign if you have no ID. It would be 'unusual', though.....maybe they're trying to make a point....if you get arrested, you may have to post bail, and your car would be impounded....For me, I'll stay off of the phone on the Sprain!

Driving is a privilege not a right. Those who can't follow the rules deserve the light punishment. Those that endanger others are just the self-centered morons who live amongst us. I know new cars come with Bluetooth technology, seat massagers and other comforts but do new cars still come with directional signals? You know, the things people used to use when changing lanes.
