Police Arrest Bank Manager for Money Theft

A manager at Tarrytown Centre's Chase Bank was arrested on a grand larceny charge after allegedly stealing over $1,000 from a customer's wallet.

A manager at Tarrytown Centre’s Chase Bank was arrested on charges of stealing over $1,000 from a bank customer’s wallet.

A woman reported on October 2 that she had left her wallet on a couch at the Wildey Street Chase bank location. Someone from the bank called her to tell her they had the wallet but by the time the woman got there, the bank was closed for the night.

The next day, she apparently recovered her wallet, only to find it was missing the $1,050 cash it had in it.

The detective division of the Tarrytown police department reviewed the bank’s surveillance tapes in which “it appeared as though he [the man identified as a bank manager] was doing something that did not look right,” said Lieutenant William Herguth.

Police interviewed the bank manager and “he then admitted he did take the money,” Herguth said.

Javier A. Echeverria, 28, of Pelham Parkway South in the Bronx, was arrested on a count of grand larceny in the fourth degree (for theft exceeding $1,000) on October 10 at 10:02 a.m. He was arraigned that morning and released for a court date of October 31.

He could face, if convicted, one to four years in State Prison, said Herguth.

NEXT TIME THROW THE WALLET IN THE GARBAGE.

Chase used to only steal our money through ATM fees, checking account fees, loan origination fees, money mangers fees, and offering next to nothing on savings accounts. Now they have bank managers actually stealing money right out of our wallets. I guess the Mitt Romney supporters will blame President Obama for this since he clamped down on the banks in 2009. Banking is not what it used to be. Hopefully this guy is no longer working at the bank. Has the bank issued any statement about that?

What surprises me is as a manager he must have known there were surveillance videos? Chase branch itself would not comment and corporate communications office in NYC have not gotten back to me. I certainly want to know the same thing so will keep you posted!

I don't think this guy would pass the Darwin test.

Great comments, people. What an idiot this guy is. On so many levels.

I heard that Wells Fargo heard about this incident and offered this guy a job and a promotion.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it strange to carry $1,050 in a wallet? Maybe she owns a business and was about to put the money in the bank, but wouldn't you then be guarding your wallet like a hawk? I've never carried that much cash and to then leave the wallet on a couch...........(scratching my head.)

I've had occasions where I'm buying something on Craigslist (cash required) or paying a house painter, etc. I wonder if she has kids. I lose everything these days...

I agree Heron. I also know many people in chase who say that corporate sets up their employees in an effort to cut payroll
