Police Beat – Sleepy Hollow: Golf Club Brandishing, Sunday Brawls, Burning Bush

A summary of incidents in Sleepy Hollow from April 13 to 20, 2012

Car Chase, Golf Club Brandishing

On the afternoon of Friday, April 13, multiple calls came in for two cars chasing each other through the streets of Sleepy Hollow. The drivers then stopped on Rice and Gordon avenues, with one man menacing the other with a golf club. Officers arrested both men and both vehicles were impounded.

 

Burning Bush

A River Street resident reported at 10 p.m. on April 14 that he came outside and found that someone had lit his plant on fire. Now it was smoldering. Officers didn't think this was a case of arson, and no neighbors reported observing anything suspicious.

 

Sunday Brawls

Police received several calls on 2:30 a.m., Sunday, April 15 for a large fight by Morse School. Two members of the group, now heading down North Washington, reportedly would not cooperate upon police arrival, the rest were sent on their way. Those two were arrested at 2:59 p.m. at Gesner Place and brought to headquarters.

On Beekman just 20 minutes later a caller reported that someone had punched someone in the face, knocking him down. Both parties were apprehended on Beekman and admitted to fighting, one with visible injuries. Both men refused to press charges, saying it was just a misunderstanding between friends. An ambulance was called but the injured man refused medical attention at the scene because he reportedly was too intoxicated; he was transported to .

 

Coveted Copper

At 10:51 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, two males wearing gloves were seen dragging cable through the woods along the west side of the train tracks in Sleepy Hollow, and then entering a white SUV with New York plates. Police found copper cable in the SUV whose driver had a revoked license. MTA police arrived and arrested the two men.

 

Sterno Fire

The fire department was dispatched at 5:40 p.m. April 15 to a brush fire in the area of Webber Avenue, close to the Aqueduct trail. The fire department was able to extinquish the fire with water cans. The fire was possibly caused by Sternos left burning in the woods; the Sterno cans were bagged and forwarded to the detective division.

 

Coyote Near Hospital

Just after midnight on April 17, a caller reported that while driving by on Route 9 he saw a coyote near the roadway by Phelps. Police saw the coyote in the wooded area near the hospital, but said it appeared healthy and no threat to anyone, having gone deep into the woods.

 

Duracell Cleanup Beings with Minor Damage

The soil remediation work in Sleepy Hollow began on April 17 at 8:12 a.m. with a little bump, as a truck involved in the operation pulled a wire down while entering the village lot from Andrews lane. The wire torn down was Verizon wire and security camera wire, meriting the issuance of a Damage to Village Property summons.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
