Police Beat - Sleepy Hollow: Asleep Beside the Confessional Booth

A summary of incidents in Sleepy Hollow from January 20 to 27, 2012

 

The reported the following incidents.

Jan. 21

3:20 a.m. Caller stated that someone had stolen his vehicle and he just saw them drive by in it. Complainant stated that the car was stolen about 20 minutes prior from Cortlandt Street at Clinton Street. The vehicle had been left running with the keys in the ignition. Tarrytown Police Department notified and information entered into system. At 4:22 a.m., White Plains PD called reporting the stolen vehicle was recovered at the Stop and Shop supermarket at 154 Westchester Avenue. The vehicle hit the building and the suspect fled on foot. WPPD was advised to impound the car and hold for prints. Owner notified that he could pick up the vehicle on Monday after it was processed.

7:34 p.m. Caller stated there was a fight in the small grocery store at 180 Cortlandt Street. Officers reported there were people drinking on the premise. Parties reported everything okay, but ABC liquor law referral completed. Open beer bottles were found in the rear of the store. Two of the six men were observed with open beer bottles and a sink in the rear of the store was full of empty beer cans. At 7:49 p.m., another call came in from the same location about a fight about to start in front of the store. Officers reported an argument, no fight. Witnesses stated that the same group fighting before had been fighting again, saying that a blue Honda left the scene with a man and a woman in it.

Jan. 24

12:55 p.m. Complainant reported that someone forged a check from with her account for the sum of $19,500 on Jan. 11. The money had been transferred from her savings to her checking account via computer; bank stopped payment. She also had a debit she didn't make for Walmart in Philadelphia for $30.74.

Jan. 27

6:28 a.m. Caller reported someone was asleep by the confessional booth at at 130 Beekman Avenue. Officers sent and reported caller did not wish to press charges; party, who did not appear to be intoxicated, was sent on his way.

11:19 a.m. Caller requested assistance at 245 N. Broadway for an infant accidentally locked in vehicle. towing called for assistance. Door unlocked by Stiloski's without incident.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
