Police Beat - Sleepy Hollow: Kids Opening Presents Advised to Quiet Down, Cooking Oil Spill

A summary of incidents in Sleepy Hollow from December 24 to December 30, 2011

The reported the following incidents: 

Dec. 25

12:14 a.m. Caller made a noise complaint at Washington Place. Officer reported kids opening Christmas presents were advised to quiet down.

Dec. 26

6:05 p.m. Caller reported she was stuck in an elevator at 100 College Avenue. Fire department contacted but caller reported back that she had gotten out. Building superintendent to shut down elevator. At 7:50 p.m., in front of the same address, caller reported a possible fight breaking out. All units sent; one person was arrested for unlawful possession of marijuana. Stiloski's notified for tow.

Dec. 27

7:05 a.m. A Depeyster Road apartment resident reported a fire alarm that had been activated since 4 a.m. that morning. County Fire Control contacted and SH Fire Department dispatched to scene. Officers requested ambulance for caller who stated she may have possible carbon monoxide exposure. Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps on scene but caller refused medical attention.

12:28 p.m. Caller requested an officer for a problem with a dog defecating on his property. Officer reported situation resolved; person came and picked up dog waste.

6:02 p.m. A Gordon Avenue resident came to headquarters to state that someone had obtained her social security number and went to an AT&T store to purchase a Blackberry phone in her name, which she was billed for. AT&T said they couldn't disclose any information without documentation from the police department or legal requests through subpoena. Detective department notified and complainant to file a Freedom of Information request.

Dec. 28

9:14 a.m. An employee from called reporting a necklace had been stolen from an apartment. Caller stated that a person was observed exiting an apartment that she did not belong in and fled to the room across the hall. Officers on scene made an arrest.

2:55 p.m. Sleepy Hollow Fire Department and Marine Unit, along with Rockland County and Irvington divisions were dispatched to the Tappan Zee Bridge, one mile past the tolls, for a jumper. , the search was turned over to State troopers for a recovery rather than rescue. The body of Scott Uzzo, 24, of Hawthorne, was not found. Uzzo had reportedly been depressed since he lost his job.

Dec. 29

4:39 p.m. Officer reported he was flagged down by a motorist on North Broadway, just north of the , for a small leaf fire. Fire Chief reported small brush fire possibly from cigarette from passing motorist was extinguished by officers on scene. Fire Department checked area and reported no further hazard.

6:20 p.m. Caller stated there was what appeared to be cooking oil in the street running from his location at 90 Beekman Avenue to the area of . He wanted to report it and say he did not dump the oil. Officers dispatched to ensure there was no hazardous situation in area. Witnesses stated that a truck was in that location earlier and appeared to be emptying a grease trap from an unknown location. Fire Chief sent someone with Speedy Dry to correct situation. Department of Public Works responding for clean-up. Police investigating source of spill.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
