Police Beat - Sleepy Hollow: Strong-Arm Robber Caught, Indecent Exposure

The following information was supplied by the Sleepy Hollow Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Here is a summary of incidents in Sleepy Hollow from September 3, 2011 to September 5, 2011.

Sept. 5

5:30 a.m. A 33-year-old resident of Sleepy Hollow was the victim of a strong arm robbery in the vicinity of Depeyster and Valley Streets. She had shared a taxi cab ride from the White Plains area with a male subject unknown to her. The male subject forcibly took her purse when leaving the taxi and fled the area. Officers located the suspect several blocks away and also located the stolen property. Luis Ayabaca, 29 years of age from South Washington Street, Tarrytown, was charged with Robbery in the Third Degree. He was remanded to the County Jail without bail and will appear in court 9/12/11. Sleepy Hollow police were assisted by Tarrytown police.

 

Sept. 3

11:00 p.m. Officers encountered an unruly subject on Cortlandt Street in the vicinity of 100 College Avenue. The 28-year-old male from Ossining was urinating in public and exposed himself to passersby. The subject was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Exposure of a Person. He was subsequently released to appear in court 9/19/11.

9:00 p.m. Officers on patrol arrested an 18-year-old Sleepy Hollow resident who was sitting on the steps of Holy Cross Church on Cortlandt Street. The man was charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana in the Fifth Degree. He was subsequently released to appear in court on 9/19/11.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
