Police Beat – Tarrytown: Egg-Laying, Window-Peeping, Off-Duty Police Heroism

A summary of incidents in Tarrytown from June 6 to June 14, 2012

Fire Boat Tailer Apparatus Stolen

Fire Chief Eugene Garparre reported to police that someone had stolen the roller system and connecting hardware from the fire boat trailer while it was parked on the west side of the Village garage. He discovered the theft on June 3 and the property was valued at about $4,000.

 

Off-Duty Tarrytown Police Sergeant Stops Jumper

As Patch reported last week, on June 8 at 2:24 p.m., was riding over the Tappan Zee Bridge just after his shift when he and happened upon a woman who was about to jump off the bridge. Gardner was able to pull her off the rails and restrain her with the help of an off-duty NYPD cop (who happened to also be riding the other way over the bridge) until New York State Police arrived. The woman was transported by Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation.

 

Diner Dispute

A caller reported a fight in progress at the parking lot on South Broadway. Officers found a man walking southbound on South Broadway near the . When the police attempted to talk to the man, he was “uncooperative, agitated and irrational,” according to the blotter report. The man was handcuffed and secured inside a cruiser for safety purposes. The man's wife, the complainant, explained that they had a domestic dispute over personal matters and she wished no further police action taken at this time.

 

Late Night Solicitor

The police receive many reports about unlicensed or suspicious door-to-door solicitors each week. One young man was issued a ticket for unregistered solicitation for the “The Make a Difference” program around the Quay condo complex around 9:20 p.m. on June 9. He was released at the scene with a return court date of June 14.

 

Window Peeping

On June 10, around 8:30 p.m., a Martling Avenue 911 caller said she saw a white male, about 30 to 40 years old, with brown hair and white t-shirt looking into her living room window. He ran away when she looked at him, she reported. Officers searched area and stopped a car driving quickly away from the location, but police determined he was not a suspect and just leaving his parent's house nearby. Woman was told to call police if the window peeper returns.

 

Tallyrand Turtle Eggs

The Tallyrand Crescent Management Office called police to report that a turtle had crawled out of the marsh wetlands behind the Crescent Drive complex and was laying eggs on a grassy area of the property. Officer on the scene reported that the turtle had started making its way back to the wetland area and all was well.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
