Police: Extensive Damage to RiverWalk Gate

A car hit the RiverWalk gate at the end of Van Wart leaving the scene and parts of itself behind.

Extensive damage was reported by an anonymous caller to the RiverWalk fence at the dead end of Van Wart Avenue on Oct. 14 at 8:48 a.m.

A Tarrytown police officer on the scene confirmed finding heavy damage to the fence and concrete block pillar apparently resulting from being hit by a car.

Miscellaneous car parts were photographed and recovered from the scene. The parts appeared to be from a Toyota 4-Runner and were placed into evidence. The area was taped off for safety and the detective division called in to investigate.

Lieutenant William Herguth confirmed the assessment of the damage as “pretty extensive” and shared these police photos. It appeared, he said, as if the car hit the gate and knocked down the pillar and damaged the fence. While he said police found parts of the car, there was not enough of it there to determine what happened.
