Police: Mother and Son Get Lost in Dark Shadows of Lyndhurst

A caller from Lyndhurst reported to Tarrytown Police that a mother and her 30-year-old autistic son, part of a Dark Shadows-themed tour group, were lost in the woods on the estate.

Officers at the scene just before 4 p.m. on July 13 said the mother was last seen wearing a Dark Shadows t-shirt and shorts, while her son was wearing a red t-shirt and shorts. They came from Baltimore.

Lt. William Herguth said the two had been missing for about an hour and half before police were notified, while others in their group looked for them.

The fire chief went to assist with the search.

Police reported finding the mother and son between Lyndhurst and Sunnyside about 45 minutes after the search began. The pair had apparently walked south for a distance and came to a fence that marked the property line of the Sunnyside restoration which they were trapped behind. Lt. William Herguth said police had to come in from the Sunnyside direction and cut the fence to let them out.

Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps came to evaluate them and both were taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital for dehydration.
