Serial Burglar Sentenced in Greenburgh Home Invasion

A stolen computer with software that allowed police to remotely access pictures of the defendant on the computer lead to the arrest of Victor Hernandez.

Victor Hernandez will spend 8 and a half years in state prison for tying up a husband and wife at knifepoint in their Greenburgh home and robbing them of cash, jewelry, a flat screen TV and laptop computer that eventually lead to his arrest.

The 27-year-old Bronx resident plead guilty in November to a charge of robbery in the first degree, a class B violent felony, for the home invasion, which he committed with two unidentified accomplices on Dec. 20, 2009.

The couple’s son, an information technology specialist, had installed software on the stolen laptop that allowed him to remotely access the laptop when it was powered on. The son downloaded photos from the stolen laptop that included pictures of the Hernandez, who was identified in April 2011. Apparently the defendant gave the laptop to his girlfriend who used it, not knowing it was stolen.

When police went to arrest him in the Bronx, they learned he was in jail in Michigan for a separate burglary. Hernandez had also been in Indiana for another burglary, which he was deported for in September 2011.  He illegally returned to the country in December 2011 when he was picked up again. Hernandez waived extradition from Michigan back to New York and was arraigned in May.

After he serves his most recent state prison sentence, he will be turned over to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
