Sleepy Hollow Cops: BB Gun Through Car Window, Woman Struck With Beer Bottle

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Sleepy Hollow.

Assault

A Sleepy Hollow man was charged with third degree assault, a misdemeanor, after a fight on Beekman.

Police responded to a call on Nov. 7 at 3:42 a.m. for a fight between the caller and another man. Officers requested an ambulance at the scene for a man with a cut on the left side of his face from being punched.

The alleged assailant, 38, was arrested and the victim was taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital.

Bad Detour, Backed into Pole

The construction company doing the renovation work on the H-Bridge initially set up a detour that had cars going the wrong way up a one-way street. A minor accident resulted.

A sign directed cars away from the northwest of the bridge that is now closed for repairs and up Hudson Street, which after a short two-way section runs one-way in the other direction.

A driver was backing up when she realized she was going the wrong way and struck a pole near 20 Hudson Street, damaging the car but not the pole. There was minor damage reported to the rear light and molding of the car.

Sleepy Hollow Police Chief Gregory Camp said this detour was "unauthorized" and quickly corrected. "Hudson Street remains one way now," he said.

Talking About God

A parent and child came to headquarters on Nov. 7 to report that the girl had been walking home from the middle school when she was approached by a man in his 20s.

The man was walking behind her, talking about God, asking where she lived and where she goes to church. The child said she felt she was being followed so she crossed the street and started talking on her cell phone, walking into police headquarters.

Police checked the area and found no one.

The suspect was described as a man with dark skin, possibly Hispanic, with thin build and very tall, clean-shaven with short hair. He was possibly wearing blue jeans and a raggedy green sweat shirt, with a black backpack.

Police put out a notice to ask the community to help them identify him so they could talk to him. Chief Camp said they did find him and identify him last weekend.

BB Gun Damage

A driver reported damage to his driver's side rear windshield while it was parked on North Washington Street.

Police reported that the damage, a hole through the glass, appeared to be from a BB gun. They took photos and filed a criminal mischief case.

Attempted Assault

Police charged a 32-year-old Sleepy Hollow man with attempted assault in the third after a domestic incident on Van Ripper Avenue.

An officer requested back up for a fight in progress on Van Ripper on Nov. 9 at 4:16 a.m.

He had one male under arrest for attempted assault and requested an ambulance for the victim.

The man was taken to headquarters and the woman, 40, ended up refusing medical assistance. Chief Camp she was not injured, at least "not as defined in penal law."

A seven-year-old was in the house at the time so police contacted Child Protective Services.

Candylifting

A Sleepy Hollow resident was allegedly caught on store security surveillance stealing items from the shelves.

The man, 35, was charged with petty larceny on Nov. 9 after police received a call around 7:30 p.m. from the gas station at 410 North Broadway.

The man was a regular customer and was caught stealing about three dollars worth of cookies and candy, police said.

His car had to be towed as it was left blocking the gas station's pump.

Bullhorn Bar

A caller reported hearing a bullhorn from the Oasis Bar on Beekman for the past hour on Nov. 10 at 1:12 a.m.

Police found no bullhorn and a quiet bar when they arrived.

Woman Assaulted

Police received a 911 call on Nov. 10 at 2:55 a.m. that a woman was bleeding at the Embassy Bar on Cortlandt Street.

Police requested an ambulance to take the Tarrytown woman, 50, to Phelps Memorial Hospital.

She had been reportedly struck with a Corona beer bottle near her right eye. She was also described as intoxicated by police.

The suspect was a Hispanic male, thin, wearing a yellow sweater and blue jeans. He had an afro-type hairstyle and a beard with no mustache. He had left the bar and gone down Cortlandt Street.

Police took photos and got a statement from a witness. It is under investigation what the circumstances were and if he was known to the woman, Chief Camp said.

Not Sick, Just Fat

A member of the Sleepy Hollow Volunteer Ambulance Corps called police to report a possible sick raccoon across from their building at Andrews Lane.

Officers sent and found a raccoon that seemed to be overweight but not aggressive.

Fire Between Buildings

State Police called in a working fire at 79 College Avenue on Nov. 11 at 10:34 p.m.

A full fire department response was called in. The building was evacuated but the fire department reported no structure fire. There was wood between the two buildings on fire.

The building department was called to the scene. The area was cleared and everyone was told they could return to their homes.

Officials deemed the fire likely to be caused by a resident throwing lit cigarette butts out the window. They believed it was accidental.

Car Ran Over Tree

A caller reported to police an accident at 279 North Broadway on Nov. 12 at 11:41 p.m.

Officers issued a summons to the driver for damage to village property as the driver had run over a small tree.

Note: An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
