Sleepy Hollow Cops: Who's Leaving Boxes of Used Cooking Oil on Street?

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Sleepy Hollow.

Two-Car Accident

There was a two-car accident reported on Oct. 17 on North Broadway at Depeyster at 2:27 p.m. 

Police Chief Gregory Camp said it was a very minor accident with no injuries and just some bumper damage as one car stopped at the traffic light was struck from behind from a second car. 

Hit and Run

A 911 caller reported a car accident to police that was possibly a hit and run. A car had stopped for the light at North Washington and Chestnut around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 when a second car, a white SUV, apparently struck the rear of the driver's side, flattening its own tire. 

Tarrytown police found the alleged car parked partially in a driveway on Dixon Street. The car had front end damage to it and someone was there trying to change the tire. A 27-year-old Tarrytown woman admitted she was the driver in question and she was issued a summons for leaving scene property damage accident. 

Police requested towing for the car that was hit. 

Police Drive Man to Shelter

A homeless man came into headquarters and asked for help finding a shelter. 
Police contacted several county shelters who said they were unable to help. The Sharing Community on Hudson Street in Yonkers said they could house him but were unable to provide transportation to their facility. Officers drove him to the shelter. 

Open Container, Irate

Cops tried to issue a summons to a man with an open container on Depeyster Street on Oct. 18 at 10:45 p.m. but he reportedly became irate. 

The officer ended up arrested the man, a 21-year-old from Peekskill, for disorderly conduct. 

Sparking Transformer

A caller from Depeyster Street reported that a transformer was sparking. Police noticed that the sparks were on and off. They notified Con Edison and called the fire department on Oct. 19 just before 7 p.m.

Vehicle Leaking Gas

A car parked on Cortlandt Street was found to be leaking gas on Oct. 20 at 12:44 p.m. 

Police called the fire department and requested towing. The fire department cleaned and secured the affected area.

The vehicle owner and her husband came to headquarters and were issued a summons for damaging village property as gasoline damages blacktop. 

Fire Chief John Korzelius reported that one bag of Speedy Dry had been used to contain the fuel. 

Two Displaced Packages

Two packages meant for Sleepy Hollow delivery were apparently found opened and disposed of in Tarrytown. 

A resident of Emerald Woods called Sleepy Hollow police about finding the two mail packages near his home on Oct. 20. He was told to contact Tarrytown PD to investigate. 

Asked to Leave, Will Kill

A caller reported to police that when he asked a patron to leave his Beekman Avenue establishment, the patron said he was going to come back with a gun to shoot him.

The caller notified police on Oct. at 6:57 p.m. and was asked to come to headquarters to make a statement. He described the male patron as wearing a grey and white striped shirt, with a bag on his shoulder, and walking with a woman. 

The caller said he did not need police assistance. 

Dumping Cooking Oil

A caller reported that someone threw a large unmarked box out of their car window at the corner of Beekman Avenue and Clinton Street. 

Police at 3:49 a.m. on Oct. 21 found one box on that corner and another on Clinton Street, both containing used cooking oil. 

Police were unable to locate the offender and disposed of the boxes. 

Attempted Burglary

A caller reported an alarm had been activated on Bedford Road on Oct. 21 around 11:30 p.m. 

Officers confirmed there had been an attempted burglary; detectives took photos. Police had no further information about the case under investigation at this time. 

Assault Arrest

Another teen was charged with assault for a fight that occurred on Oct. 6 on Cortlandt Street. 

The 18-year-old from Sleepy Hollow was arrested on Chestnut Street on Oct. 21.
