Sleepy Hollow Police: Child Hit, Lawn Driving

A summary of incidents in Sleepy Hollow from Oct. 4 through Oct. 11, 2012

The following information was supplied by the Sleepy Hollow Police Department.

Child Struck, No Injuries

On October 9 at 4:32 p.m., a caller reported she had struck a child with her car and the child left the scene with no visible injuries. Police tried to locate the child with the driver and found mother and child on Valley Street. Officer requested an ambulance and medic to look at the child and the child was transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital for precautionary measures only, said Police Lieutenant Anthony Bueti.

Friends Don’t Let Friends…Drive

Police were called on Oct. 10 at 3:50 p.m. by a Munroe Avenue resident saying two women were on her lawn, in their car. The woman also told police that the women had switched places in the vehicle, driver and passenger changing sides.

The car was towed with minor damage done to village property (the patch of grass between sidewalk and curb) and the resident’s lawn. Police issued the actual driver a summons for driving without a license or learner’s permit and a summons to the actual passenger who allowed her to drive the car. The passenger said she was teaching her friend how to drive. Perhaps the driver got nervous and somehow went off the road, speculated Bueti.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
