Sleepy Hollow Police: Wire Fire, Firefighter Falls in Shallow Hole

No license, broken bumpers

Police pulled over a car on June 22 and found the driver to be unlicensed and the car to have extensive damage.

The driver was stopped on River Street just after 3 a.m. Police report the driver had no license and the car had "extensive damage throughout," including "both bumpers separating from the vehicle." The car was towed.

"Bar owner hit me"

A person came into headquarters on June 22 at 3:25 a.m. to report that the owner of the Embajada Bar on Cortlandt Street hit her.

She said the bar owner, who she knew only by first name, hit her in the face. But police reported that she seemed too drunk to give a statement at that time and they told her to come back in the morning.

Police said she bore no visible injuries. The bar was closed at the time but the sergeant reported that the argument was over the price of drinks.

Two DWIs

Police reported two DWI arrests on June 22 in Sleepy Hollow.

At 5 a.m. police received a report of a car, possibly disabled and possibly occupied, parked with no lights on on Route 9 at the entrance to Phelps Memorial Hospital.
Police found the car there and made an arrest for Driving While Intoxicated, transporting the person to headquarters and impounding the car.

At 12:44 p.m. that afternoon, an accident occurred on Cortlandt Street with slight damage to one car. Police reported the driver of the other car felt ill and needed to be taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital.

At 1:37 p.m, police went to Phelps with a urine and blood testing kit and, based on the results, charged the man with DWI. The defendant was released from Phelps with a return court date.

Wire fire, firefighter falls in shallow hole

Sleepy Hollow police received a 911 call on June 23 at 10:24 p.m. for wires on fire in front of 135 Depeyster Street. The fire department was dispatched as the caller said that the wires were sparking when the wind blew. The fire chief contacted Con Edison, who would handle the situation.

Meanwhile, the fire chief reported that a firefighter at the scene had tripped and fallen into a large hole in the roadway on Depeyster. The hole was about six feet by two inches deep. He sustained minor scratches to his knee and right elbow and refused medical attention at the scene. Police took photos of the injuries and the defect in the road for the record.

Loud dog complaints

A house on Pocantico Street was the subject of several complaints from neighbors saying there was a dog barking late at night.

One caller on June 24 at 11:30 p.m. said there was a dog barking in the rear yard of a nearby home. Police were unable to make contact with the owner and issued a summons.

At 12:30 a.m., more callers reported hearing a barking dog in the area. Police still did get not an answer at the door.

The same happened on June 26 at 11 p.m., when a summons was again issued and no one answered the door.

Group drinking, flees

A group reportedly drinking in Barnhart Park fled into the GM property when police arrived.

On June 25 at 12:55 a.m., officers reported that a group of about five men drinking beer near the west wall of the park then fled into the GM property when they arrived.

One of the men fleeing apparently left his car parked in the middle of the roadway in front of 29 Barnhardt Avenue. Police were unable to locate the driver and got the car towed, giving it a summons for being double parked.

One person was found at 1:23 a.m.; another turned himself into police headquarters shortly after. At 2:06 a.m. police requested an ambulance at headquarters for a prisoner complaining of pain to his ankle. The ambulance came but the person refused medical attention.

At 2:16 a.m., police made contact by phone with a third suspect, who said he would turn himself in. He arrived a half hour later.

At 3:14 a.m., a fourth suspect came in asking about his car, was recognized by police, and arrested.

Note: An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
