Update: Woman Dies in Five-Car Accident on Tappan Zee Bridge

A Poughkeepsie man and his 10-year-old son in the fifth car involved were uninjured.

The following contains updated information on injuries from the New York State Police, as of July 23, 2:54 p.m.:

A car going the wrong way in a northbound lane of the Tappan Zee Bridge July 23 caused a multi-car accident, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to four others.

State Police stationed at Tarrytown's Troop T barracks got the call at 8:51 p.m. that a car was driving in the wrong direction on the Hudson span. Seconds later, police said they got a call that things were now much worse: multiple cars were involved in a roll over and entrapment.

The driver of the car reportedly going the wrong way, a white SUV, has been identified as Michael Schechel, age 69, from Thiells, NY.

The SUV, driving southbound in the northbound lanes on the Rockland County side of the bridge, had then "slammed head on into a Nissan...causing it to roll over multiple times before coming to rest on its roof in the middle lane," according to the state police report issued Wednesday morning.

The Nissan was driven by Newman Ayeh-Brachie, 57, of Hillcrest, NY, who perished in the accident.

Police said the SUV driver Schechel was taken to Nyack Hospital with a head injury. His passenger, Luz Hoffman, age 56, was taken to Westchester Medical Center with unknown injuries as was the Nissan driver, Ayeh-Brachie.

A 34-year-old male driver, Juan Robles, from the Bronx was able to swerve and avoid the SUV but then hit the second driver's car. Police said he was not injured.

A fourth car, driven by Nancy Gallo, 44, of Basking Ridge, NJ, also avoided the SUV but rear-ended the third car. Gallo was taken to Westchester Medical Center for neck pain and shock.

Finally, a fifth car, driven by Thomas Gibson, 40, from Poughkeepsie, NY, side-swiped the SUV. He was reportedly with his 10-year-old son and both were uninjured.

A passenger of the Nissan, who has been identified as Hannah Ayeh-Brachie, age 56, from Hillcrest, NY, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rockland County Medical Examiner, state police reported.

The scene was backed up for hours as New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Units investigated the scene. All northbound traffic was rerouted from Route 9 in Tarrytown -- according to some reports for up to six hours.

All lanes on the bridge are reopened as of 8:50 a.m. July 24.

Jeff Kent wrote on Ossining-Croton Patch Facebook's page, "I was stuck in the Southbound traffic for over an hour, it looked ugly."

Another driver who was able to cross the bridge from Rockland to Tarrytown passed a bad car accident, noting that traffic was shut down northbound and there was a car upside down.

"Coordinated efforts of the Troopers on scene alleviated any vehicles stuck in traffic on the bridge, which prevented any further property damage or injuries," state police said.

Police report no arrests have been made as investigation into the accident continues.
