Tarrytown Cops: Road Rage Assault, Student Breaks Face

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Tarrytown.

Pedestrians Struck

There were major injuries reported from a car hitting two pedestrians on Wednesday. Before this in the most recent round of blotters were a few minor accidents involving pedestrians. 

A 62-year-old woman was struck by a car in the Tarrytown train station parking lot on Nov. 1 at 6:50 a.m. She said she now suffered severe pain in her right leg and knee and requested medical help.

The woman was taken to Westchester Medical Center by Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. 

Lt. William Herguth said the car was turning left into the entrance to the lot south of the station when it struck her with its front bumper. He said the car was not speeding.

An Ossining woman reported on Nov. 8 just after 1:30 p.m. that she had struck someone with her car as he was crossing West Main Street. 

The victim, a 73-year-old Sleepy Hollow resident, was taken to Phelps by TVAC for an abrasion to the head. 

Police issued the driver a summons for being unlicensed. 

Scammed

A Crescent Drive resident reported to police on Nov. 1 that she believed she had been scammed out of money over the phone. 

The woman was contacted about a loan, which she was interested in getting. She was told to buy money cards and call in the card numbers. She did so, spending $1,033. 

Bad Bank Account

A Wildey Street resident reported to police on Nov. 5 that someone had opened an bank credit card account under her name. As of this date, the account had a balance of $578.25. 

Identity Theft, Grand Larceny

A woman reported she was the victim of identify theft and grand larceny.

On Nov. 8, she reported to police that someone unknown to her had made duplicate copies of checks from her Chase bank account. 

The checks were cashed for $1,650 on Oct. 25 and $1,480 on Oct. 26, for a total of $3,130. 

Child Takes Mysterious Cab Ride

A mother called police on Nov. 5 about a suspicious incident that happened to her daughter earlier that day. 

She told police, with her daughter filling in more details, that as her daughter was leaving Washington Irving School, a grey cab with red lettering stopped and asked if she lived on a certain street. She said yes. The driver told her he was there to pick her up. The child got in the cab and the driver took her to Warner Library as she asked. 

She asked if she had to pay any money and the driver told her it was prepaid already. The child said nothing else happened during the ride. 

The mother found out about this when another parent, who saw the girl getting into the cab, emailed her. 

The incident was noted for the record. 

Airbag Accident

A driver attempting to park accelerated too quickly and hit a parked car, jumped the curb, and hit a tree, police said. 

This happened in a parking lot on White Plains Road on Nov. 7 just before 11 a.m. 

Police requested an ambulance since airbags were deployed in the driver's car. The 87-year-old man from Irvington complained of chest pain and was transported to the Westchester County Medical Center. 

Sale of Alcohol to a Minor

The Greenburgh Drug and Alcohol Task Force reported the arrest of a Cortlandt Street man for unlawfully selling alcohol to a minor in the Bridge View Plaza parking lot and to the minor for possession of alcohol by a minor. 

He had allegedly sold a 19-year-old two bottles of Heineken beer which he had already purchased.

The 36-year-old Sleepy Hollow resident was charged with unlawfully dealing with a child in a first degree and released. The minor was released to a responsible person and given a court date. 

Drug Arrest

The Greenburgh Drug and Alcohol Task Force requested marked police units at the DoubleTree Hotel parking lot on Nov. 7 at 10:14 p.m. for a drug possession arrest. 

When Tarrytown police arrived, task force officers said they had the situation under control and a suspect in custody. 

The man, 29, of White Plains, was taken to headquarters and released with a court date after being charged with:

  • two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh, 
  • unlawful possession of marijuana,
  • aggravated unlicensed operation in the second, 
  • and consumption of alcoholic beverages while driving.

Lt. Herguth said he was found with two small bags of cocaine and one small bag of marijuana. 

Road Rage Assault

A caller reported a fight had broken out in front of the bakery on lower Wildey Street on Nov. 8 at 5:36 p.m. Officers found no fight upon their arrival but soon arrested one man for assault. 

Lt. Herguth said the defendant, 30, of Sleepy Hollow, claimed he had been cut off by the other driver. He then allegedly followed the man and assaulted him when he stopped. 

The victim, 56, of Tarrytown, had abrasions on the top of his head, on his leg, and elbow.

The victim refused medical attention at the time. 

Police took photos and statements of the injuries and the victim was given an order of protection.

The defendant was charged with assault in the third degree. 

Student Assault

A security officer at EF told police that he had a student in his office reporting he had been assaulted by another student on campus earlier that day on Nov. 9.

The victim, 18, was taken to headquarters for further investigation. Police took photos of the injuries, but the victim refused medical attention. 

Lt. Herguth said he suffered a broken facial bone and abrasions to his hand and knee. 

Security reported the suspect was possibly in NYC now. Police told them to have the suspect respond to police headquarters upon his return for further investigation. 

The suspect, 17, came to headquarters and was charged with third degree assault, an A-misdemeanor.

Grand Larceny

A White Plains Road caller reported his generator was stolen from inside his garage. 

The garage had apparently been entered sometime between 8 p.m. on Nov. 6 and 6 a.m. on Nov. 9. 

The orange Generac 5500 was removed. 

Sunnyside is Still in Village!

A woman came to police headquarters on Nov. 10 to report that a taxi driver told her the fare to Washington Irving's estate would be $10. The taxi operator was interviewed and told police the woman told him she was going to Irvington. 

The taxi operator told the woman the price to Sunnyside would instead be $3, the rate for a senior citizen. Anywhere in the village is $4. A resident blogged about this on Patch recently here.

She paid and was taken to her destination. 

Tarrytown on Standby for Rockland Brush Fire

On Nov. 14 at 3 p.m., County Fire Control requested one engine to come to Central Nyack Fire HQ to stand by for the large brush fire. Alarm 18 was sent. 

On Nov 15 at 9:18 p.m., County Fire Control asked one Tarrytown engine be put on standby at Nyack Fire HQ to assist with the large brush/forest fire. 

Alarm 18 was again sent. They were among hundreds of responders from the region that were on hand to battle the days-long blaze that ravaged hundreds of acres of parkland in Orangeburg.
