Tarrytown Man, 59, Charged with DWI After Head-On Crash

No one was injured in Rockland County accident, but two vehicles were heavily damaged.

A Tarrytown man who told police he had just attended a wedding was charged with drunken driving after he was involved in a head-on collision on Route 340 in Orangeburg, according to police in Rockland County.

Stephen J. Marks, 59, of 169 Main St., Tarrytown, was arrested 6:20 p.m. on Sunday. In addition to being charged with driving while intoxicated, Orangetown Police said he was accused of aggravated DWI after a chemical breath test showed he was nearly three times the legal limit for alcohol in his system.

Although Marks was involved in a head-on crash with his 2007 Chevrolet truck and a 2009 Mitsubishi, police said neither he nor the driver of the other car were injured. However, both vehicles sustained significant damage.

The 22-year-old Rockland County man driving the Mitsubushi told town police that he was heading east on Route 340 when he saw the Chevy truck coming straight into his lane from the opposite direction of traffic. The Bardonia man said he came to a full stop on Route 340 and the Chevy crashed into his car.

Police said town officers investigating the crash found Marks appeared to be intoxicated, and Marks then failed several field sobriety tests. Police said Marks told town officers he had just been at a wedding and that he did not know where he was.
