Tarrytown Police: Bridge Worker Struck by Car, Contractor Threatens Unhappy Customer

A summary of recent police activity and arrests in the village of Tarrytown.

Small Statue

Christ Episcopal Church reported to police on August 14 at 12:40 p.m. that an unknown person had left a small statue on the front steps of the church last week. They wished to have it noted for the record. Police did disclose the nature of the statue.

CVS Suspicious


A customer at CVS on North Broadway caused some suspicion when he asked the manager on August 14 if the store had ever been robbed. 

The manager reported this to police describing the man as heavy-set with glasses and white stereo headphones. 

Police searched the area but didn't find any such man. The man however used a credit card to pay for his purchases and the manager said they would contact police with credit card information. The manager also turned over a photo of the man from their surveillance tapes. Police are investigating.

Water Please

A man was reportedly knocking on a door on Tappan Landing Road which caused suspicion for a resident the afternoon of August 15. 

The resident reported that a man wearing shorts, t-shirt and backpack had knocked on the door asking for water and began yelling when the resident refused. 

Police spoke with the described man at Franklin Street and found that he was homeless and on his way to the train station. He was sent on his way.

Banging on House Windows

A Dixon Street resident reported to police on August 16 at 3:52 a.m. that a man was banging on his house windows, possibly trying to enter. 

Police found the area clear upon their arrival and would follow up with the resident in the morning. 

Suspicious Man in Bushes


A Prospect Avenue resident came to headquarters on August 16 to report that around 3 p.m. she was on her deck at home and saw a man in an orange t-shirt run through the bushes on her property and then duck down to hide behind her bushes. 

The woman told police she became frightened and fled her home.

After speaking with her boyfriend, who was at work, she came to the police station. Officers searched area and found no one. 

Business Partner Dispute

A Main Street break-up between business partners got ugly enough for someone to call the police. 

On August 18 at 10:18 p.m. a caller reported he was involved with a dispute with his business partner. 

Officers on the scene found that one man had entered the business location demanding the full amount of money ($70,000) he was owed for being in the business. The caller said they agreed upon him getting $30,000 up front with the remainder paid off over the next four years. 

However the man allegedly became agitated and smashed a few glass cups on the ground, leaving before police arrived. 

The caller and a third owner were told by police that this was a civil matter; they would need to follow up with their lawyers. 

Pit Bull on Car


A John Street caller reported to police on August 19 at 12:17 p.m. that there was a loose pit bull on top of a car. Officers on the scene requested Greenburgh Animal Control, and the dog was taken to the New Rochelle shelter. 

There was damage to the car caused by the dog which was noted for the record. Police issued a violation to the dog owner for an animal at large, and left a note for the owner advising them it had been taken to a shelter. 

Lt. William Herguth said police didn't know why the animal was on the car but it had apparently gotten loose from its owner.

Youths Shooting Pellets


A Tappan Zee Bus Driver reported to police on August 20 at 8:41 p.m. that youths were possibly shooting pellets in the area of Cottage and Central Avenue. An officer found a 16- and 15-year-old on Central Avenue, both with air rifles. 

The youths admitted to shooting the air guns and were taken to headquarters. The juvenile was turned over to his mother's custody. The 16-year-old was issued a village code summons and his mother was contacted and came to headquarters as well. 

Bridge Worker Struck by Car


Country Fire Control requested that Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps respond to the bridge on August 21 at 8:28 a.m. for a worker that had been hit by a car.

The accident occurred in a northbound lane, mid-span on the Tappan Zee Bridge. TVAC transported one adult man to Westchester County Medical Center.

Contractor Threatens Over Bad Review


A Beech Lane resident reported to police on August 21 that she had fired a contractor for doing sloppy work, complained online about him, and then got threatened in return. 

She said that after firing the contractor, she reported him to Consumer Affairs as well as posting negative comments about him online. 

She then received a phone call on this day from the contractor demanding she take the negative post down "or else." 

Police advised the caller of her options and noted the case for the record at this time. 

The next morning the woman's husband came to headquarters to report he had received a similar voicemail saying that the posts online were damaging the contractor's business and if they were not removed he would retaliate. 

Again the complainant opted to have this noted for the record. 

Booted


A towing company worker reported to police on August 22 at 11:44 a.m. that after he had released a car from its boot in the Walgreens lot in Tarrytown, the driver threw a rock and damaged the worker's truck. 

The officer confirmed the truck sustained a very minor dent. The incident was noted for the record.
