Tarrytown Police: Coveted Copper, Cash Theft

A summary of incidents in Tarrytown Nov. 2 through Nov. 7, 2012

The following information was supplied by the Tarrytown Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Deer or Rock?

Nov. 2 at 9:58 p.m., a caller reported he was avoiding a deer on Neperan Road and struck a rock instead, which caused damage to his car. Officers filed an accident report.

Pedestrian Struck

Greenburgh Task Force officer reported on Nov. 5 at 12:32 p.m. that a car had struck a pedestrian in the Bridge Plaza parking lot. Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps were called, but Lieutenant William Herguth reported no further information available.

YMCA Theft

On Nov. 5 at 8:58 p.m., a woman walked into headquarters to report that $700 cash had been stolen from her wallet while she was using the gym at the Tarrytown YMCA. Case filed.

Wire Theft

On Nov. 7 at 7:22 a.m., police filed a grand larceny case for the alleged theft of over $1,000 worth of copper wire. The call came from DoubleTree hotel security saying that someone sometime overnight after 8 p.m. had stolen the wire from work trucks parked behind the hotel.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
