VIDEO: Water Main Break, Neperan Closed Around Lakes

DPW crew at work replacing a section of broken pipe, expecting to reopen road and have water back on in the Crest neighborhood around noon.

"Hell of a way to start your day," said DPW foreman Scott Weaver, who got the call from Tarrytown Police at 1:30 a.m. that there was a water main break at the lakes.

His crew assembled at the bend in Neperan Road alongside the lakes where water was gushing out all over the street around 2 a.m. and have been there since. "We're not going home until the job is finished," Weaver said, estimating that that would be around noon.

Until then, though the roadway is now dry, the stretch of Neperan from Sunnyside Avenue to Tower Hill Road has been barricaded off to vehicular traffic.

First the men had to pump the water off the street early this morning to find the main line. They were able to isolate the one problem area. A worker is currently standing in a metal protective sleeve inside a hole the crews dug alongside the roadway to access the broken pipe. He sucks up water in the trench with a huge hose attached to the DPW's vacuum/sewer jet truck. Then the men will cut the piece of broken pipe and replace it, Weaver said.

Weaver attributed the break to "old pipes" and "wear and tear." He jokingly added, "plus it's Friday the 13th."

Water has been shut down in the Crest neighborhood area all morning, said Weaver. , not on break this week like the public schools, cancelled its classes today.

Despite class cancellation, on Hackley's website are the following updates as of 11 a.m.:

To Mayor Fixell & Mr. Blau, It is hard to imagine that the workers shown in the video were not wearing hard hats! We already have one tragedy due to improper and unsafe practices, why invite another. Is it true that we have a new highway foreman over the present foreman? Commuting from Dutchess County and we pay? That we will end up paying for repairs & expenses to Mr. Blaus private vehicle? Adding new & unnecessary expenses and salary in todays economy just doesn't cut it. Why a new foreman in the first place? I understand that the present foreman has been in charge for a numberr of years. Did he become obsolete or unqualified? We have a village engineer. shouldn't he oversee the department? I realize that he is also the'building inspector', and with these qualifications, he was hired. Cann't the same system properly & safely run the DPW? Don't be lulled to sleep by the top 10 ranking!

The bosses on scene are being paid $275,000 a year (Weaver,McGarvey) but yet they can't even follow safety policies.Mayor Fixell must really want the new Park named after him.The best part about it is when he has no money left."Sorry Folks Parks Closed moose outside should of told you" 7.8 village tax increase ,layoffs ,screwing the employee's .Have no money times are tuff? Forget the Park and Trails to nowhere!!!!! P.S $80.00 per day in fuel for a person responding 60 miles away ,Why? Did this new hire form Peekskill just have a sanitation worker last week fall off the Garbage truck and suffer a severe head injury? Did the Mayor and Board look into Peekskills workers comp losses prior to his Hire?
