VIDEO: Water Main Break, Neperan Closed Around Lakes

DPW crew at work replacing a section of broken pipe, expecting to reopen road and have water back on in the Crest neighborhood around noon.

"Hell of a way to start your day," said DPW foreman Scott Weaver, who got the call from Tarrytown Police at 1:30 a.m. that there was a water main break at the lakes.

His crew assembled at the bend in Neperan Road alongside the lakes where water was gushing out all over the street around 2 a.m. and have been there since. "We're not going home until the job is finished," Weaver said, estimating that that would be around noon.

Until then, though the roadway is now dry, the stretch of Neperan from Sunnyside Avenue to Tower Hill Road has been barricaded off to vehicular traffic.

First the men had to pump the water off the street early this morning to find the main line. They were able to isolate the one problem area. A worker is currently standing in a metal protective sleeve inside a hole the crews dug alongside the roadway to access the broken pipe. He sucks up water in the trench with a huge hose attached to the DPW's vacuum/sewer jet truck. Then the men will cut the piece of broken pipe and replace it, Weaver said.

Weaver attributed the break to "old pipes" and "wear and tear." He jokingly added, "plus it's Friday the 13th."
